Danny Brown reflects on life and presents a masterpiece
Danny Brown is a rapper in his thirties who recently got big. He is from the city of Detroit, where he was sheltered from the crime life by his parents at a early age, but he ended up becoming a drug dealer in his teen years. Danny Brown also dreamed of becoming a rapper and in the 2000s, he was going to New York all of the time to work on his material, but he didn't like any of the results that were coming out and he felt that he needed to push himself further. After running from the law for years, he spent eight months in prison, where he would spend his free time writing lyrics for songs he wanted to work on once he got out. He eventually got out, decided to combine rap with the sounds of the Rave scene of Detroit, and bam! The Danny Brown that we know of now was createdOld is a tale of Danny Brown finding who he is and the life that he wants to run away from. On Side A of the album, he talks about how people want "the old Danny Brown", but he doesn't want to be the "old Danny Brown", as that would mean that all of the work he has put into his musical career would go to waste and he would just end up being a drug dealer for the rest of his life. He also talks about how the drugs have gotten to him and he doesn't want to "Party All The Time" like he did in "XXX". Danny Brown realizes that partying is fun and all that, but that isn't how he wants to live his life and he has things he has to work for and represent.Side A of the album is just a top-notch hip-hop album, it's an album that you would had listen to with your friends back in the 1990s while cruising through your neighborhood. There are some catchy tunes here, but this isn't the side of the album that Danny wants people to party to, this is the side that you listen to and understand everything that Danny has gone through. It is raw and it is one of the rawest rap albums that has been put out in the last decade or so. Side B is a different story though, as this is the side of album that Danny throws EDM sounds and catchy hooks for people to hear and ironically, most of the singles come from this side of the album. Danny Brown still talks about how partying isn't the same to him anymore, but Side B is more of a party album, as it is something that is catchy and will have people jumping out of their seats as they dance and sing along with it.Danny Brown presents TWO (I consider each side to be a separate album) albums/sides that people can relate to and Danny brings some excellent features on here as well (A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs, and some other people) that just make this the perfect rap album. It doesn't matter if you're into more "laidback stuff" or "partying music", Danny presents a masterpiece that tells the rocky story of his life that people will appreciate for years to come.

An album that sort of challenges the listener.
Let me start by saying I'm a fan of Danny Brown. I first heard him on Ab-Soul's Terrorist Threats and thought so THIS is the guy I keep hearing about. I then discovered that I had XXX on my hard drive already (although to this day I don't know how it got there). I listened and immediately became a fan. Hell I thought he was more than one person with the way his voice changed. After knocking XXX over and over again I went and copped the Hybrid. That's when I saw where Danny came from as an artist. The mixture of these two projects seem to be two halves that make up the album known as OLD, but it's not that simple. With the first track Danny discusses the dilemma he's faced with going into the making of this album. Some people love the introspective deep voice Danny that reminisces on his rough Detroit upbringing with regret and a bit of clarity. Others love the high pitched, pill popping, off the wall Danny. Old is supposed to be a throwback to the era of cassette tapes with two sides. Side A has mostly Danny's normal voice detailing his upbringing in Detroit. Side B is filled with "Turn Up" music designed to keep you dancing and having a good time. The challenge comes in mostly on side A. The beats that Danny uses are not very straight forward. The sound bed backs up some great storytelling but you have to pay attention to get the most out of it. Side B is not really an evolution from the majority of XXX. Some of it is on par while the rest is a little below the quality of songs like "I Will". Old is a good album and deserves repeat listens. I think the best song is the final song on the album Hold On. That song alone is worth the price of admission.

Danny Brown grows up
This album is gonna take awhile to penetrate the mainstream, and I'm not sure yet if I prefer this or XXX, but goddamn it's good. The clever "Side A/Side B" switch makes this a full-on concept album and is a great followup to the more backwards looking XXX. Also, on a sillier note and as a fan, I was excited to hear Danny Brown's, a consumate hedonist, take on Molly and this album does not disappoint in that regard. On a technical note, the beats are fantastic. It's different from his earlier stuff, less J-Dilla inflected soul beats(although that's still there to a large degree) and more of an eclectic mix of grime, triphop and dubstep. The guest appearances are also stellar, Schoolboy Q's verses on "Dope Fiend Rental" confirm him as one hell of a rhymer, and the narrative strength Brown showed on previous releases is in top form here.Overall, just buy the damn thing if you're any sort of hip-hop fan

Solid
I have been a Danny Brown fan for a while now, but am sometimes put off by the misogyny in some of his lyrics. The first half of this album really appeals to me, with the side of Danny that I most prefer, containing songs with more serious subject matter and a greater range in his vocal approach. Most of the second half falls more in the category of club bangers, to me start to blend together after two or three of them. Overall, though, there's some pretty solid diversity present and it's a good showcase of the different sides of Danny Brown.

Danny Brown is one of my favorite rappers and this is my second favorite project of his next to XXX. This box set is very nice. The record sounds decent, the vinyl sounds a bit more jumbled and compressed than the FLAC files but only on the really busy tracks. The pressing is excellent, no warping of any kind on it. The box set is a value for its price.

Solid pressing, great value
I already knew that I liked the music on this album, so this is specifically for the vinyl. In the grand scheme of things, this is probably a 4 star product, but for the price (I paid $14), this is more than I expected. Most importantly, the pressing is a solid quality. You're not getting a ton in terms of the sleeve/case, but for a vinyl release under $20 I feel that this is pretty standard.

Shipping left something to be desired, album was stellar
Album is amazing, however the shipping was mediocre. The album was placed underneath all of the tissue paper and the corner got bent in the folds of the cardboard box...something to be aware of.

Energetic and sometimes serious
I am prone to despising Hip Hop songs revolving around sex and drugs but Danny Brown tackles the subject with such surreal energy that it really didn't bother me, the production fits perfectly with Dannys style whether he's doing his kinda high pitched insane voice flow or his serious real voice... the serious side is as enjoyable as the 'party' side and it makes for a eccentric mixture of pain and pleasure.
