Field guides catalog, illustrate, and tell you how to identify wildlife; these Bradt wildlife guides are not field guides but help the traveler go beyond a field guide's mere catalog of wildlife by placing it in the broader ecological and cultural context and emphasizing what makes it unique. This one also has lots of practical advice about where to observe wildlife (there are short sections listing the primary is in each Australian state), health and safety, conservation concerns, suggestions for further reading, and the real and imagined dangers of venomous and other wildlife. It is also admirably light and compact for travel purposes.It is copiously illustrated with excellent photographs (though one small gripe is that not all species discussed in the text are illustrated). It also has impressive breadth for a small book, covering both freshwater and marine environments, for example. If you have more interest in a particular group of animals you will definitely want a comprehensive field guide for that group, since this book has pretensions to being one.

My friend is so pleased with the photos and info in the book, she's packing it forher 1st trip to Australia. Excellent photos , compact size, I'm very happy with this purchase.Books was almost like new.

This book is loaded with excellent photos and information about the unique creatures of Australia. I bought this as a gift for my son who just moved to Australia, so I was only able to view the book for a short time. However, it was easy to see the great quality of the book. I might just buy my own copy!

This book is well-written, it includes the not just the common Australian animals, but also the unusual creatures.

Bought this book to show Grand children the type of wildlife seen and available to see and as a souvenir of my recent trip to Australia. illustrations and descriptions good and well presented. I would recommend this book to anyone going to Australia and would like to see what wildlife to expect.

I bought the book for my grandson in Australia therefore did not read it cover to cover, but it seemed to be a very good comprehensive book for somebody getting to grips with his new country.

An excellent overview of Australian wildlife. Probably more than you need to know for a short trip. Informative and easy to read text.

I was looking for a field guide for our up-coming trip to Australia but this does not fit the bill at all and will be staying at home.There are a few interesting bits about the variety of wildlife we can expect and where to find it, but it's not something you'd want to put in your rucksack for a day's outing in the bush or forest.
