Very disappointing: Great characters are developed just to fail.
Flaws are what make characters interesting. But when their weaknesses are overwhelming, they lose the part of themselves that made me care for them. The balance shifts from my caring about them to my disillusionment and disappointment in them. The love between Caroline and Rogan begins. They both feel it. Rogan is sensitive to her husbands recent death and gives her time. He even discusses this with his so-called best friend, Bridger. Rogan sends the dog named Sweet Girl to Caroline and Rachel. Caroline doesn't get that he's calling her Sweet Girl. Hard hearted Caroline writes Rogan a dear John letter, which he inexplicably accepts. We only hear about one letter from Rogan to Caroline and he is out of the future picture for her. I guess, coming between life-long friends is not worth her consideration. Caroline subscribes to the Love the One You're With philosophy. (Strike One) Bridger took his brothers wife. Now he takes the woman his friend has told him his friend is falling for. (Strike Two). Rogan easily gives up and begins to fall in love with the picture of Bridger's sister that Bridger cleverly gave to him. (Strike Three. I'm out!) There is no one left that I care about. But, I mourn the love I felt developing between Rogan and Caroline, and the friendship Rogan felt for Bridger.

Yankee Widow
Liked the setting of the book, civil war times. Took me back to much harder times. Maybe the way we should live. They didn’t complain about the hard work. People were used to it. Work had to be done even if it was the hard way.Reminded me that there were much harder times for all of us not just whites.Hoping there is a series of books like this.

Excellent
I am a civil war buff so I enjoyed this book. Having visited Gettysburg many time I easily visualized what Caroline & her family experienced during the battle. I hope there is a sequel following Caroline, Bridger, Rogan & Amelia during their post Vivian war lives.

Captivating Reading
Wonderful book, couldn’t put it down. I love reading this author. It’s a departure from her more recent books. If you love American History this book is for you. This is one of those books where you don’t want it to end.

Very Good
I have read all of your books and read your blog. This book is the best. I like to read about the civil war. You wrote this to make you feel like you were there in middle of the fighting and all the hurt & the death. Thank you for about very good book. Hope you write more on the war.

Disappointing.......
I was very excited to read this book. I live near Gettysburg and the battle there has been a front and center reality my whole life. I was especially anxious to read a story from a “local’s” point of view. The first 55-60% of the book was well done and quite interesting. Then the storyline began to be rushed and somewhat disjointed. By the end of the book it was just plain disappointing.I don’t wish to spoil the plot or the ending but I must say the book left me very dissatisfied and HUGELY disappointed......Hugely. I averaged my rating to reflect the very good 60% and the disappointing 40%.

Brilliant Start, Bad Ending
3.5 stars so I rounded up.The novel started out great with a great and fully realized main character and setting. However, the story became more languid as it wore on and the ending was extremely disappointing. The shining aspect of this novel is its battle sequences but those unfortunately end halfway through. The romance can be cringe at times too, especially after the 80% mark but still a fun light read in an interesting setting.

Great novel
This was a great novel. From the very first page it had my full attention. If a book doesn't "grab me" from the beginning, chances are I might not stick with it. This most definitely didn't happen with this! Based accurately on history of the Civil War as it hits Pennsylvania, you won't be able to put it down.

Historical Civil War Fiction
I loved The Yankee Widow by Linda Lael Miller, I gave her book 5 big stars, I really enjoy reading Civil War historical fiction and I don't mind a story with a little romance. The book begins in Pennsylvania during the war, when Caroline Hammond is notified her husband Jacob has been wounded, she leaves her farm and travels on her own by train to find out what happened to him, is he dead or alive? This begins the story about Caroline, her husband Jacob and their daughter Rachel.Caroline lives in near Gettysburg, prior to, during and after the famous battle. You're soon reading about the terrible battle at Gettysburg, how it effected the soldiers on both sides and the local people.Linda Lael Miller writing style has you engaged in the story, you care deeply about the character's and what happens to them! Caroline's hired hand Enoch, a escaped pregnant slave called Jubie, a Yankee soldier called Rogan McBride and his best friend Bridger Winslow he's a Confederate officer. Later in the book his young sister Amalie Winslow is mentioned and she's living alone at the family plantation in Georgia. I'm sure there will be another book to follow about Amalie experiences during the war and I can't wait to read it!
