Great gift for a future mountain man
My 10 year old son has decided that he is going to be a mountain man (yes from the tv show) when he grows up. He spends hours researching how many axes he will need, how to build animal traps, etc. So when I saw this book I figured it was worth a try. I was not disappointed. Both my son, and my husband (an army vet) love this book. It is made like a field guide. Has tons of great information. I bought this on a whim and am very glad I did. I like it so much, I am planning to order another for my older son who is in the army as well. Very much recommended!!

Interesting and Informative Book
I bought this book in 1987, and I have enjoyed reading it several times. I just purchased the hardcover edition, because I have thumbed through the old book so many times, that the pages were falling out. Some other reviewers stated that the book is written in a hard to understand way. Anyone with a sixth grade education can read it and understand it just fine (I was actually in seventh grade when I first purchased it). As others have pointed out, the book was written in 1956. There are newer books out there that discuss the latest clothing and fabric materials, but this is a classic survival book. Some of the methods may seem outdated, but many of the topics are about PRIMITIVE survival skills. As with any book, I would not expect to read the book and be able to survive in the wild without any practice. This is a handy book, and paired with other books, it will give volumes of information for a night or two in the woods. The Army Field Manual 21-76(Survival) actually refers to this book in its "Other Publications" section at the end of the manual. All in all, it is a good book for the money, and it has a lot of helpful facts and material.

This is a great book
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it is a little outdated, but the ideas are just as valid today. This is written by a writer who lived off the land and knew exactly how to survive in situations that others would give up on. The fact that this was written before the GPS came around doesn't make it any less valuable a resource. How on earth do you start a fire with only a piece of ice? Read the book! (And yes, I really don't think I could start such a fire even with the book in front of me, but it's nice to know that it is possible...) How do you create a fish trap out of sticks? How do you create a snare? How do you find civilization if you are lost? How do you find water? What type of things do you need to bring with you on camping trips? What is safe to eat, and what is not? These types of things are all answered inside. I've read it cover to cover several times and I believe it is the perfect type of book to give to an outdoorsman or to keep down at a cabin for a little light winter reading... Highly Recommended!

a good handbook to have and read incase the S. hits the fan!
got this book for my wife who loves hiking in the woods with our 9 year old nephew and show him the different plants that are edible and explain about the different bugs and animals and such... this book should arm her with enough knowledge, hints, tips and tricks that Our nephew will think she is the best "survivalist" out there.. lol im just a touch upset that this isnt the version with the rubberized cover... lol Oh well, for $3.00 im not going to complain THAT much lol

Got it for my boyfriend for his birthday. He likes this stuff, and I find it to be good knowledge to have. Hope it'll be useful when we go on holiday to visit my mum and be out in the forest in Sweden. Good condition.

Ce livre permet de comprendre la nature, parfois injuste. Bon investissement qui est rentable en culture générale, dû à la grande diversité de sujets traités.

I'm reading this book with a German ESL student. It's quite advanced, but very enjoyable. Some of the material isn't relevant to where we live, but the parts that are are still applicable today.
