Exactly like the kind found in Brazil!
My husband’s mother side of the family is from South America (Brazil). Every time we have family together, they were always drinking this tea they made from Yerba mata. I fell in love with it! They gave me a bag of Yerba they had brought back from Brazil! It was delicious and I used it fast!So I was looking for a replacement, and came across this product: Cruz de Malta. The pictures and descriptions matched what I had been given. It is ground up loose leaf and stems. It was packaged very tightly and shipping was super fast! And the best part, it tasted just like the kind I had straight from Brazil! I highly recommend this product!!

This brand had a smokier, danker, muskier taste ...
This brand had a smokier, danker, muskier taste than the other brand I had. Still, it gives me more energy than coffee. This with a teaspoon of brown sugar and a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream, and you are in flavor country, my friend. Population: your taste buds.

Great for beginners and beyond
I've only been drinking Yerba Mate for about 1 month. I did a lot of research beforehand and Cruz De Malta came out the clear winner of which I should try first. I read a bunch of reviews and the consensus is that it tastes like a stronger version of Green Tea. I pretty much agree with that. It takes a little while to determine the optimum water temperature, but I now know exactly which temperature suits me best. If you find it bitter, your water is too hot. Stick to between 160 - 170 degrees F (71-77 degrees C) and you will notice a big difference in the flavor, even within that range. Also, don't forget to add dummy water (room temp or cold) before you add the hot water, so the mate doesn't get shocked, which will also make it bitter.I have tried several other brands, some very well regarded, and have found them wanting. In that case, I mix them with Cruz De Malta and all is right with the world again.Mate isn't for everyone. It takes a little while to learn how to prepare it properly and how to enjoy it (proper gourd and bombilla selection). If you aren't willing to do that, then don't bother. For those of us that do, I can see the pursuit of the perfect mate could be a lifetime journey. In the meantime I'm willing to enjoy many mates along the way. This will continue to be my "go to" Yerba mate until I find another that can change my mind. Until then, Salud!

Great and Afforable Yerba Mate
I have been drinking Yerba mate for around 10 years now, so I guess at this point I could call myself experienced. Yerba mate itself is definitely an acquired taste (like coffee), so I think more about what the purpose is for drinking it than anything else (though now I actually find and prefer the taste of it over coffee.. just seems smoother to me now). I switched to Yerba mate from coffee because I have a reflux issue and coffee literally makes me gag/regurgitate if I try to drink it in the mornings. Another piece I appreciate of the Yerba mate life is that it doesn’t give me the caffeine jitters like coffee does, just a nice “productive” type of energy. So first let me say, if you aren’t used to drinking Yerba mate, this should probably not be the first brand you try (yes a bit stronger taste maybe). I remember my first few times drinking it (not this brand, just in general), comparing it to the smell of a barrel of hay in a horse stable. That’s about right. After many years of drinking it, I have learned if you want to combat the bitterness, drop a little honey and cream in it, or a dab of powdered coconut tea (another new obsession by CACafe, though I have found it cheaper at Wal-Marts that carry it rather than Amazon). Otherwise, if you have gotten used to the taste and it no longer makes you think of things like wet hay, this is an excellent choice because it is more affordable than most brands (especially ones carried in Whole Foods) and still gets the job done. This is ALWAYS my Yerba mate “go to” on Amazon, and I hope they will continue to keep their prices competitive so I don’t have to switch brands.

A shifting wave of flavor
I have tried several brands of yerba mate, and this is by far the best. The flavor sort of bends with each sip. In other words it can't be pinned down. One reviewer said it had a fruity flavor, and another said the flavor was smoky. I think it is a combination of both where the fruitiness is dominant with one sip and then smokiness dominates the next sip. I absolutely love it. Cruz De Malta Mate has been marketed for about 146 years. If the company wasn't doing something right, it would not still be in business! I have also noticed a definite improvement in the functioning of my digestive system since I started drinking it.

My new favorite mate!
I've been missing mate ever since studying abroad in Argentina years ago, but some of the brands I've bought have been pretty bitter. I prefer my mate unsweetwened (so it better taste good by itself), and this stuff is great! Cruz de Malta is true to the earthy mate I grew to love, without being too strong. And true to what the packaging says, the leaves are on the slightly-larger side, so I've had no issues with it clogging my straw/bombilla.Next time I'll be getting the 1K size :)

First mate I ever tried and damn, I'm hooked.
First mate I ever tried and damn, I'm hooked. Researched other mates before buying but went with this one seeing as how it's made in Argentina (best thing to do is go to the source, right?) and I like the fact that they included the palo (the stem) along with the leaves. A lot of reviews mentioned that this is one of the strongest and most bitter mates but that is why I chose it since I'm replacing coffee with mate and I drank my coffee stout and black with no sugar. This seemed like a good substitute and it did not disappoint.
