LiquitexBasics Acrylic Gesso, 64 Ounce Jug, White

This product did what it said it would do and only required one coat. I have used Kiltz a lot and I like this product better. It did not come in a gal jug, but came in a bucket and it did leak some in the box, but I didn't feel like that much of the product was lost. I don't understand how it leaked since the bucket seemed to be sealed well.

This was my first time using gesso, so I didn't really know what to expect or how to compare. This served my purpose decently, but it took several coats to cover my wooden boards to full opacity and I guess I was expecting a little more for all the hype that gesso receives. It was useful at covering up my old failed artwork on my canvases, but it just took a lot more coats than would have I wanted.

I can't believe all the negative reviews. Thick, really? Who would want watered-down gesso? I thin it down by about 20% by pouring out enough to fill 3/4 of a 1 pint wide mouth mason jar, then adding water and leaving a small amount of air in the neck. I make 3 jars and seal with cling film and blue masking tape. I add 1/4 cup hot water to the 64 oz container and shake well. I use this first. I usually coat 8 24"x24" canvas panels so there's not much left over; that said, I've had no problems using gesso stored over 6 months. It's fabulously thick and creamy. A wonderful product and a good price.

Gesso is a base for paint, not an opaque substance to cover up old paintings. you will still see whatever is beneath. But, the paint use will hold really well. Gesso is a prep, not a cover up. Just wanted to make that clear.

It came fairly quick. I got some good use out of the product. I do wish the price would have been a little less maybe under the $20 range. That would have been more satisfying for a product quality then I would have clicked excellent and given 5 stars

Liquitex makes high quality gesso. I purchased this bottle for a very large triptych I am painting. The price was good. It’s much more convenient for me to order online then to run up to the art store.

Tres bon gesso. Je l'utilise regulierement soit pour preparer mes toiles soit pour recouvrir d'anciennes peintures. Il faut cependant passer deux bonnes couches pour un bon resultat. Je recommande.

I am extremely happy I purchased this, the Gesso is MUCH thicker than I expected (similar to oil paint consistency) but I prefer self-leveling Gesso so I always mix mine with distilled or tap water. I used to use "Liquitex Professional Gesso" but it was very thin and I only added 5-10 small drops of water. Surprisingly the "Liquitex Basics Gesso" is actually thicker than the professional, allowing me to use a 1:1 ratio and turn 64oz into 128oz.I use a foam brush to coat the canvas and the water does the rest of the work, wait one hour and sand with 240 grit sand paper. I do this until I have 2-3 layers and I sand the final layer then use compressed air to clean it off. It is as white as printer paper and it is as smooth as glass. Wait a further 48 hours before painting, just for good measure.If you don't mind mixing your Gesso 1:1 with water in a separate container before use, this is an incredible deal that you literally will not be able to beat anywhere else, I've checked. If you mix to self-level consistency you're looking at $0.21/oz.

High quality and price was great. Also the customer service gets an A+++. Had to return one as it was damaged and leaking and I received the replacement before I even returned damaged one 2 days later!!

Definitely getting the moneys worth.
