My heart is in my stomach because this touched me in many ways Rob.
I remember those day’s listening to the radio, ready to hit the record button. I’m sorry to hear your story about Renee. I lost my mom tragically and unexpected 6/22/2018 in a house fire after just talking to her. I was driving from Florida to Michigan to spend some time with her, and received a phone call from neighbor around 2pm and I was in TN somewhere. I’m having a hard time still, knowing I never had that chance to say goodbye. There’s more to my story, but right now my mixtape is stuck on pause, but I’m trying.

Pop This One Back In Again!
Rob Sheffield is that most unique of critics. He breaks the rule that says you shouldn’t talk about yourself because of the self-indulgence, yet manages to do so in such a way that he shines new light on both the soul of music and the soul of man. That’s probably a bit dramatic, but it doesn’t make it less true.LOVE IS A MIX TAPE is a soulful book, written as a way of understanding not only love and loss, but the role music plays in helping us achieve even the tiniest bit of understanding. His recollection of his relationship to his wife, Renée, is filled with beautiful passages about discovery of love and self. But he also uses these moments to reveal truths about the music which inspired these recollections as well—I will never listen to Nirvana the same way again. It’s the best praise I can give to say that this book opens both your mind and your heart. Enjoy the laughs, the cool turns of phrase, and the constant desire to queue up another song from these playlists, but also make sure you keep a few Kleenex on the ready.

Beautiful book
This is a book which will tear your heart out as it is swelling it with love. A tremendously spiritual book about love and loss and the music that binds the two together.

It's Not Just About the Music
Rob Sheffield's Love is a Mix Tape is a heart-breaking, uplifting, funny, sad and entirely human memoir about love and loss unified by Sheffield's love of music and his life-long penchant for crafting the mix tape. Music fans born in the 60's will recognize most of the music (and understand why, for example, the eighth grade dance mix tape had to have Free Bird and Stairway to Heaven to end the sides), but I don't think you have to know much about the music he mentions to enjoy this wonderful book because the book simply uses music as a way into his story about Renee. Renee was his wife with whom he shared an intense love and they found love through love of music as well. Renee died suddenly, tragically at a young age, but somehow Sheffield's engaging personality comes through so well in his writing that he makes this memoir overall an uplifting read, despite the undertones of intense sadness and loss. The love he has for Renee (and she for him) and the love of music, Sheffield's charming, self-deprecating humor makes this a wonderful read. I recommend this one to all, music-obsessed or not. Enjoy.

Sweet and sour story, for music lovers
Nice book, if you love music. I read it on a trip to Charlottesville (where the story is set), and it transported me back to the 90s... The zillion musical references made me want to make mix tapes again! Not a masterpiece novel, but still well written, fun and easy to read, with an emotional side to the story that is almost comparable to a "coming-of-age" at some point. I recommend it!

I would have enjoyed this book anyway
I have to say I would have enjoyed this book even without the deeply personal story of Rob losing his wife. In fact, I may have enjoyed it even more. I think I could have read an additional 600 pages of Rob reminiscing about the late 80s, early 90s, listing all of the music he and his wife listened to, bands they went to see, parties they attended and guilty pleasure television shows they watched together. What are there like 800 other people in the US who remember and know that Grenadine put out one of the best records of the 1990s???? So for that reason alone, I beg Mr. Sheffield to revise this book and keep it strictly to the good times. Ok and if that isn't actually possible, this is still a fine book, far surpassing my expectations.

great read, especially for musos obsessed with the 90's and mixtapes.
somebody recommended this to me because of its content. it's pretty much tailor made for me: it's not too long of a read, it's a first person account, it's heavily based around making mix tapes in the 90s/of 90s music, and it mentions both sebadoh and sleater-kinney. brilliant! it kept me company on a couple of long, exhausting train journeys and i'm definitely glad i read it. i'd say for anybody that loves music being closely twined with irreplaceable, interpersonal relationships, they should give this a go at least once.the themes touched on (mortality, loss, living) are all things i gravitate towards by default. it's the sort of thing i write about and the sort of thing i love to read about. the recollections are vivid at times and the blurry sort of memories you remember on nights you can't sleep at others and it's a beautiful tribute to love, renee, and music in general.

The quality of the book is great for a paperback as it the content
This gateway book into Sheffield's writing has me sold. The quality of the book is great for a paperback as it the content. The artwork is high quality and the page quality and how the book reada is satisfactory to say the least. A recommended book for anyone that wants a piece of Sheffield's life and wants to be swoon bu the bittersweet story.

HEARTBREAKING & HILARIOUS BIT OF 90'S POP CULTURE
Before I-pods and ripped CDs we all made mix tapes. I'm sure most of us over a certain age still have them safely hidden away somewhere, never quite having had the nerve to throw them out (broken cases and all) We named these tapes, gave them away to friends or lovers and assigned them different purposes. Remember the break-up tape, the I'm so infatuated with you tape, the party tape, workout tape, road trip tape, stolen off the radio tape etc etc. It took hours to create a mix tape, attempting to get the songs in perfect order without cutting off the last one. Now imagine, nearly 20 years later having the courage to scour through and listen to all of them again. The joy of rediscovery, the nostalgia, the OMG I forgot all about that song which reminds me of that party/girl/boy/car/moment. You might also experience pain or sadness over that long lost love. Well this is what LOVE IS A MIX TAPE is all about.I absolutely adored this book. Rob Sheffield style of writing is so honest, natural and funny that you'll feel like your talking with an old friend. He manages too capture the spirit of the 90's perfectly too as he tells a moving autobiographical account of his years spent with wife Renee. Anyone who lived through that time and is into Pop culture will find something relatable here. This is a tragic love story and on the very first page we learn that Renee has died, we just don't know how or why. We then flash back to the time to before they met as Rob experiences an awkward adolescence and discovers his love of Indie rock. One night Rob meets the sweet Southern girl of his dreams and although only 25 they soon marry. It's not a perfect marriage however; they're broke most of the time, they fight, they get a dog, they drink Zima (remember Zima?) but they always listen to music as one. Rob and Renee ultimately get 7 years together and even though I knew that Renee was going to die when it actually happened I was left stunned. Sheffield depicts the ache of new love and utter helplessness of losing it beautifully and following Rob through the next grief stricken chapters was at times hard to take.Throughout this story it is always about the music and each chapter begins with a dated mix tape complete with side A/B track listings. Some of the tapes were made by Renee others by Rob but you're sure to have a lot of moments remembering your own life's soundtrack as you journey along with the music. You might even find a couple of new favourites. Cheers.
