Dark Days (Penguin Modern)

Beautifully written. Excellent book. The sad part is that it was written long ago and you would think it was written today. Nothing has changed. How terrible. But his writing/style is wonderful. So lyrical and perfect. He doesn't rant and rave, he states clearly and calmly the state of the world. That's the saddest part of all. Things don't HAVE to be the way they are. it's a must read book.

This little old thing came faster than I’d expected. It’s so tiny, and only 48 pages (roughly). I only ordered this because I heard one great review about “Dark Days” by James Baldwin. I’m hoping to jump right in, and knock this reading out the way.

This trip through Dixie exposes the underbelly of the Deep South. The small town escapades caught up in the traditions of local dirty politics, southern food, laundered money, gratuities, kickbacks, buying and sellng favors and business as usual. All tolerated untl the wrong people get slighted, stolen from, murdered or exposed. Hearing a southern drawl is going to make my teeth clinch for a long time. It reads fast, keeps you capitated by the action and the development of charactors. The author knows his South!! He didn't didn't learn it second hand either. In the style of James Grisham this is an exceptionaly good read.

I enjoyed reading Dark Days in Dixie from start to finish. The closely interwoven novel which incorporates politics, business, corruption, drug dealing, murder, revenge, and unpredictable twists in the seedy Southern Alabama political scene is a thriller. The relatively short chapters really keeps the reader turning pages and makes for a quick read. I would recommend it to anyone.

Baldwin wrote this set of essays back in 1985. 37 years later, each phrase and sentence resonates the same way as it did then. What stands out is the author's sharp sense of perception and, defined perspectives. A rational reader of this decade can only hope this book could become a fiction. Baldwin himself would've wanted that too. If more people get to understand the perspective that Baldwin presents, maybe some day, half a decade later we can hope for it to, finally, become a work of fiction.

These essays reflect the real colour bar in the USA - and sees little chance of any changes for the coming soon or even at all?All he writes is a harsh but true-and should be read be in the school curriculum-but can’t see that happening.

Sono estremamente felice di aver trovato questi saggi in questa carinissima collezione. Ne ho comprati diversi. Formato elegante e anche font comodo per la lettura. Grazie ad amazon riesco a trovare libri difficilmente reperibili in Italia e in lingua originale a prezzi davvero convenienti.Saggi che tutti dovrebbero leggere dalla penna acuta di James Baldwin.
