Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon (Greek and English Edition)

This is an indispensable book for students of Greek, but for older readers is a godsend. The larger typeface is great, the print quality is excellent, and the binding, for a paperback book, is solid.

I have a copy of the for in-depth NT study, but there are times when I prefer the abridged Liddell and Scott: when I'm not in the mood to deal with heavy lifting (BDAG is bulky); when I want a non-NT perspective on a word; and from time to time I look at Classical texts that have vocabulary that's not included in the BDAG. The larger text of this re-print is much appreciated too. I usually frown on paperbacks and adhesive binding--but this is sturdy and makes for a good price.

I've read some of the other comments and while I can understand where these people are coming from, their complaints don't seem relevant to the context within which this book will likely be used. 1) Greek is a highly inflected language, i.e., a lot of words are modified depending on how the word is used in a sentence. Sometimes the modifications mean that the beginning of the word is changed from the root in such a way that you can't find it in a dictionary by looking it up alphabetically. As an example, the English verb "to be" can be spelled "is," "was" or "were." I find Liddell and Scott to be reasonably useful in listing some of the more common alterations (usually with a reference to the longer listing under the root word). But it's not unreasonable for the authors to expect that you have some knowledge of Greek grammar. Certainly a book that listed separately, in alphabetical order, every form of every Greek word would be unwieldy, to say the least. Also, one should be familiar enough with Greek to be able to decipher the abbreviations ("acc." for "accusative," etc.) But again, to write out every such word would make for a huge book. 2) Some of these comments may be in reference to an earlier printing, but I find the size of the type and the thickness of the paper to be just fine. I would say the typeface is typical for a reference book--maybe not as big as the typeface in a typical Webster's, but I have no problem reading it. (The diacriticals, such as the breathing marks, are sometimes hard to decipher, but that's been true for practically every Greek text I've read.) The size is quite convenient for me to keep on my desk, next to my laptop, for easy grabbing, without dislocating my shoulder. 3) I have been using the "Little Liddell" to translate a Hellenistic text, i.e., several centuries later than the Great Greek Century of the 400s B.C.E. from which come the texts with which most of us are most familiar (Thucydides, etc.) It often lists changes in the usage of words over time, indicating when something may have a different meaning or use in the Great Greek Century from the meaning in, for instance, the 200s B.C.E. I haven't yet found a Hellenistic Greek word that is not listed (in its root form) in the "Little Liddell."

Best thing about this book is the price.That said, it seems a good genuine reproduction with no pages missing, binding good, pleasant paperback cover. Paper is the greyish recycled looking stuff but no problems reading the text.For the price it's a good handy book for chucking around when reading Plato for pleasure.

Great dictionary for reading new testament or classical Greek, or just looking up Greek words. I love the fact that the definitions are sometimes rather quaint. Be advised, this is a Greek-English, and not English-Greek so it only goes one way, but that's probably why its so comprehensive. The definitions are often prefaced with quite a bit of grammatical info, so be ready for that. I doubt I'll ever need an upgrade from this. It covers all the major classical dialects and Koine. It'll even serve you well for reading Homer!

Although this lexicon contains quality information, the font is dated and very hard to read. Don't be fooled by the note on the cover that says larger typeface, the words are tiny! The lines which make up the Greek symbols are often distorted or broken, looking more like they were stamped on the page. Reading Greek is hard enough when the font is legible and this lexicon is tough to use.

This book happens to be useful for anyone wanting to read Ancient Greek. It is very extensive in it's content. The only thing that I wished from it, might be a chart on pronunciation, and a chart on the order of the alphabet.

This dictionary is incredibly detailed and thorough. If you are studying ancient or modern Greek, you will find it extremely useful.

804 pages, you must know basic greek reading to enjoy this book, no Strongs number, and no scripture references either. A great additional companion to more detailed Lexicons.

A very useful version of Liddell and Scott's Greek-English lexicon which is genuinely easier to consult because of the size and clarity of the printing. As you get older this matters!
