The Perennial Plant Called Soapwort Going back to the early settlers, soapwort plant was commonly grown and used as detergent and soap. The saponin properties found in soapwort plant are responsible for creating the bubbles that produce soap. The plant typically grows in colonies, blooming from midsummer to fall. The flower clusters are pale pink to white and lightly scented. Butterflies are often attracted by them as well. Soapwort seeds can be started indoors in late winter with young transplants set out in the garden after the last frost in spring. Otherwise, they can be sown directly in the garden in spring. Germination takes about three weeks. Soapwort plants thrive in full sun to light shade and will tolerate nearly any soil type provided that it is well draining.
