Elementary School Aged Girls will Love Mallory.
It is the most exciting event to grace the stage at Fern Falls Elementary, a school musical. Mallory is in a whirlwind of excitement, but she has BFBB (Best Friend Behaving Badly) problems. Mary Ann is just not acting like herself lately. How could Mary Ann not be excited about the musical Annie? She and Mallory do everything together, and Mallory is looking forward to being in a play with Mary Ann. Auditions are quickly approaching and Mallory is practicing her lines. She even made Mary Ann a practice schedule, which Mary Ann completely ignores! On the day of auditions, Mary Ann looked like she was sleepwalking through her lines. Mallory, on the other hand, got the lead role as Annie. Mary Ann did not even get a part in the play.Mary Ann continues to be a BFBB when she reads a book and goes to bed during a sleepover, walks to school alone, sits with someone else at lunch, and does not respond to Mallory's email. Mallory is so desperate for answers she even asks her brother Max for advice. What is Mallory to do when her best friend does not even know she is alive? Why is Mary Ann acting so weird? Is she jealous of Mallory? Mallory starts to think Arielle and Danielle may now be her new friends. Can she trust their advice? The curtain is quickly rising. But the show cannot go on until Mallory gets her best friend back.Mallory in the Spotlight (2010) by Laurie Freidman is the latest addition to the Mallory Series. Elementary girls will continue to love the lifelike Mallory as she faces relatable problems. Mallory has to deal with a brother who just does not understand her, girls who pretend to be her friend (but really are not) and a friend that just needs a little space. Parents and teachers will enjoy the text appeal of the book. This chapter book defines play and theatre terms within the storyline, which helps the reader expand her vocabulary. Throughout the book, Mallory recaps events and foreshadows upcoming events. This is a great tool for the reader to reflect and predict what will happen next. The illustrations by Jennifer Kalis are simple and help the reader visualize the emotions in the story. I especially enjoyed the illustrations that Mallory "draws" to express her frustrations with the situation. Teachers visiting Mallory's/Freidman's website will find lesson plans, student writing prompts, and quizzes for books in the Mallory Series.

Mallory -- generates discussions
I love the Mallory books because they never fail to get my 6 year old talking. Why is she thinking this way? What do you think is really going on? What should Mallory do? This book is no exception as Mallory tries to figure out what's ailing her bff Mary Ann. My 6 year old loves these books, and my 10 year old reads them for fun, too. We'll be waiting eagerly for the next installment!

If you already think you like Mallory McDonald, you're going to adore her in her latest "production!"
Mallory McDonald and Mary Ann Winston, next door neighbors, a.k.a. best friends for life since they were born, were having problems. Every time Mallory even looked at Mary Ann she was making like she was invisible and looked the other way. They were in Mr. Knight's fourth-grade classroom and nasty, nosy Arielle and Danielle knew there was something special going on and wouldn't even think of telling Mallory, Mary Ann, and Joey anything. They would just have to wait until class started. Things were like that at Fern Falls Elementary, but when class started they'd all know about the big surprise. It wasn't long before the whole world knew that the school was putting on a musical called "Annie" and auditions would start the next week. Everyone was wildly interested and started asking questions, including Pamela Brooks, Mallory's "good friend and desk mate from last year." The only one who wasn't interested was Mary Ann. Now that gal was always interested in everything. Of course at lunchtime snobby, snotty Arielle and Danielle thought they would get great parts and she wouldn't. Of course Mallory, Girl #1 with "red hair, bangs, and lots of freckles" was "super excited" and Mary Ann, Girl #2 with "curly blonde hair" could not care less. Whatever. What was WRONG with her?Mallory's brother Max said "he'd practically gone deaf listening to [her] singing for the past week," but admitted she "sounded pretty good." Mary Ann was like a total stiff when she tried out, but it was so weird because she was "always excited about everything." Mallory, of course, was great and each time some "not-so-good kid" auditioned she felt her chances were better. When the cast list was posted on Friday you know who (Girl # 1) got the LEAD! But wait a minute, check that list again. Mary Ann didn't get a single part. Even April got to play an orphan. What on earth was wrong with that girl? If Mallory thought things were bad then she was in for a surprise. Was she going to lose her best friend over some little production? Would the show be able to go on without her?If you already think you like Mallory McDonald, you're going to adore her in her latest "production." They ain't misbehaving (well maybe Mallory does a little), but there sure are a lot of misunderstandings in this one. If you've read any in the Mallory series before you know that both she and Mary Ann detest the two charm queens (not) Arielle and Danielle. Just a bit of a teaser: Mallory really thinks they like her! Enough said on that score, but if you are a Mallory fan, this is one of the best yet. Try as I might, I just couldn't figure out why Mary Ann was ignoring her best friend for life since they were born. It was a BIG surprise. Let's just see how good you are . . . do you think you can solve the mystery?

Mallory!
I bought this book for my 6 year old niece, Brianna. I thought she'd like it because I am her Aunt Mallory...and I knew she'd think it was cool to see a little girl in a book with my name. Mallory isn't the most common name...at least not around here. Brianna loved the book and I'm excited to know that there are a series of sweet books out there with my name!
