The Walking Dead Compendium Vol. 1

I came into the Walking Dead craze a little late, the first series of the TV show had already been aired and it wasn't long before the second series was about to start. Luckily my girlfriend wanted the series 1 box set for her birthday and convinced me to watch it with her, hence the fandom began. I bought this compendium during the mid season break of series 2 and I was initially hesitant to start reading it because it might ruin the surprise of what happens in the series. For those of you with similar concerns, you don't need to worry about this. The book and series have the same characters (with some noticeable differences/absences) and while the plots are very similar, there are significant differences that means reading the book won't ruin the series. An example of this without giving too much away is that Shane died very early in the book but has only just been killed in the series. Now, onto the actual book: The artwork is very good; it is all in black and white and I originally thought this would bother me but after a while you don't even notice. The story itself is told very well, by that I mean there is some nice character development and the dialogue does not seem cheesy or out of place. There is plenty of action but also lots of quieter moments where you learn more about the characters so it's not just zombie killing the whole way through (although there is plenty of that of course). The story is a lot deeper than you would first expect, it really looks at how people would react and change due to a zombie apocalypse, raising questions like "what would you be willing to do to survive?". There is a lot of scope in this book, it covers what looks like the first three series of the TV show (as mentioned, with significant differences using the same locations/characters). Due to this it is huge and is great value for money just because of the amount of content. It may just be because the TV show moves quite slowly plot-wise and things are drawn out for TV but at times the book seemed to move very quickly, seeming to pass over what were major plot points in the series quite quickly. This wouldn't be an issue if you haven't seen the TV series though and it doesn't detract from the quality of the story. The series was based on the comics which were obviously written first so it lets you pick up on little things having read the book when watching the series that others wouldn't. For example, two things in the last episode of the second series made me excited for series 3, I'll leave you to determine which two things they were! I'm not really sure what else I can say about it besides from if you like the series or even if you haven't seen it and just like the whole zombie apocalypse thang then buy this book, you will not be disappointed. Hopefully the second compendium will come out soon!

My son absolutely loved The Walking Dead Compendium! He couldn’t put it down and finished it faster than expected. The story is thrilling, emotional, and packed with suspense. The characters are incredibly well-developed, and the artwork adds a powerful punch to every scene. It’s not just about zombies – it’s about survival, humanity, and the tough choices people make in desperate times. He’s already asking for the next volume. Highly recommended for mature teens and fans of graphic novels and post-apocalyptic stories!

It has been ages since a TV show grabbed my attention. I burned through the first season and waited for the second, completely oblivious to the fact that it was based on a comic book still running strong till a friend told me. I hesitated ordering it till the finale of Season three of the TV series thinking that the book would spoil it for me but I did and to my shock, the book is different when it comes to the storyline. True, the characters are the same and some of the settings (like the prison and the farm - these two are in the book as well) but what they go through in the books are different from what they suffer in the series. For those out there thinking the books or the TV series would spoil the other, you are wrong. At the time of writing this, the two are not completely related except the characters. With that out of the way, the book does a splendid job of juggling between zombies chomping and human brutality in a world where the living come back from the dead. Different characters have different back-stories that just doesn't make them extras in a book but a person you 'may' relate to. One thing I may add here which I don't think a lot of reviews have touched here. The storyline is not for the weak of heart. There are underlying tones of suicide, torture, rape and many other crude stuff. This is certainly not the kind of book you would buy for your 13 year old nephew or grandson. Characters change and develop when they go through such horrors and how they overcome (or don't) is something that makes this book unique. As for the compendium itself, its a collection of first 49 issues of the comic series still running strong. Its an excellent value for money. The book itself is split in chapters (not issues) so you won't be disturbed with pages that say 'End of issue One' that goes up to 49. Its a neatly compiled book gives you necessary breaks between chapters for you to catch your breath. On the service side, the condition of the book was neat, clean and the delivery was fast. Overall, an excellent book for adults that is excellent value for money, considering you are not paying for 49 comic issues but one. Recommended for all mature comic book readers out there.

This comic book is great for its money and larger than expected. If you love zombie shows or movies you’ll love this book!

Must read. It’s really much more beautiful that the tv series. All the drawings and the tale are just fantastic.

The first compendium includes the first 48 issues or the first 8 volumes (depending on how you prefer to count), so the price is really good. I know many TWD fans have always liked zombies or comics or both, so it's probably worth mentioning that I'm usually not a huge fan of either: I tend to prefer vampires to zombies and novels to comic books. However, I got into TWD because I've been a fan of Andrew Lincoln since he starred in "Teachers" (UK). I only watched the first episode because of him and was hooked straight away. I haven't missed a single ep and started reading the comics because I couldn't wait for the next series to start. Why mention this? Because I'd like to stress that TWD is very different from your standard zombie stuff. Even if you don't like zombies (or comics) in general, give this story a go. Yes, there are zombies, they are dangerous and disgusting and eat people. But TWD is so much more than that. It's about humans facing the apocalypse. It's about development in the face of death. It's about morals, loyalties, surprises and disappointment. It's about priorities in life and about how family isn't a question of blood. Yes, it's a comic, but if (like me) your main issue with comics is that there usually isn't enough of a story in a single issue, the compendium is perfect - 48 issues, that's roughly four years piled up into one book. The downside of getting into TWD is, of course, that once you've devoured all the 169 issues that are currently available, you will have to join the rest of us in waiting for about a month for the next one. Also, no need to worry reading the comics will spoil the tv show for you - the writers often change details, add characters or swop or change storylines just enough to keep both versions interesting.
