Noa Noa
No doubt an accurate reflection of Gaugin's Tahiti "adventures." Worthy of study by researchers but a rather superficial creative work written at a time when Gauguin intended to stir interest in his paintings failing to sell. Suggestion: Read in conjunction with David Sweetman's excellent biography.Excellent graphics.

Interesting read
Let's face it...Gauguin was not a writer. He was an artist. These were his memoirs. I always enjoy reading about people who bucked the system. It also peeks my interest of the ways of the South Pacific cultures. A great insight through Gauguin's eyes as the Polynesians describe to him what life had been like prior to the missionary's harsh control over them.

Authentic and interesting
Having just traveled to the Society Islands I wanted more info on Paul Gaugin. This translation of his journal provided insight I would not have gotten otherwise. Combined with other biographies it rounded out the picture. Recommend it if you are interested in either the South Pacific Islands or Gaugin and his art.

Understanding Gauguin
This is a lovely book... and, brief though it is, helped me to understand more about Gauguin's reasons behind his actions. I read it at a perfect time - when the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY was holding one of their most important exhibits on Gauguin and featured his wood cuts. It's a colourful, passionate and painful journey.

Buy vintage
I have a copy of this book and I highly recommend purchasing an earlier edition - I have an old papaerback edition with the orange and black cover and it is beautiful. It was a great, easy read and very insightful.

A sensitive, personal account - not as detailed as I'd expected, but illuminating.

noa noa, a-oka
I picked it up for a school project and it was fantastic. It's just a nice little journal, I feel there is more but I don't know for sure, this may be all there is in the tahiti journal of Paul Gauguin. The pictures are great, the translation is very well done. Excellent read.
