All in all this is a GREAT book
"Only the Names Remain" is a true story about how the Native Cherokee got forced out of the lands where they, their ancestors and their ancestor's ancestors had lived for hundreds of years. The story starts with the names the Cherokee people left, like the Chattahoochee River or the towns of Ellijay, Talking Rock or Hiawassee. But the Cherokee are gone, thrown out of their land by President Jackson and the many other whites who wanted Cherokee land for cotton and gold mining. The Cherokee, a peaceful tribe who were just trying to fit in with the whites, building towns, brick houses and schools, now were told to pack up and walk the thousand + miles to Arkansas. One out of four Cherokee died on the hard Trail of Tears. All in all this was a very good read. It had some awesome illustrations of Cherokee artifacts in it. Alex Bealer makes something that may seem "just cruel," into a heartbreaking struggle for freedom. This book has 10 chapters with 4-10 pages per chapter.

Powerful Reading
I fully agree with Shannon, this book is a must for anyone wanting to see what was done to Native Americans in the South at the hands of whites and especially Andrew Jackson's policy of destruction of our people. We are trying to trace the family ancestry of a child (my great great grandmother) who was taken from a Trail of Tears family and "adopted" by a white preacher. She may have been saved from the Trail of Tears but not from the dispicable way in which she was treated during her lifetime subsequently. Shannon, I hope you email me!

Good Primer for Children
I've been buying various books of various elementary reading levels for my daughter to read when she grows up, and I've been putting a heavy emphasis on reading material that depicts American history in the most honest light possible. I'd prefer if she didn't grow up with the sanitized understanding of history I grew up with. Only the Names Remain is decent. It's a third grade reading level book about the Trail of Tears, so I guess I can't expect it to be graphic on the details. But I do very much appreciate how Andrew Jackson specifically was stripped of any valor he might have achieved in the war of 1812 due to his horrific treatment of the Cherokee. One line that bothered me, when the early moments of conflict leading up to the trail of tears were being described was "there was pain and suffering on both sides," which I'm afraid will draw a false equivalency between the degrees to which "both sides" were suffering, but thankfully the majority of the book primarily focuses on the deception and broken deals the are the foundation of white America's dealings with American Indians, and for that I think it's a good primer for raising your kids with an awareness of this particular low point (one of many) for the American confederacy and the Federal Government, and their history of abuse and exploitation of non-whites.

Great Buy
These pajamas are so cute and warm. The quality is very good. The fit is true to size. Our maltese is about 7 lbs and 8 inches tall and the fit is perfect! This Fit warm is a larger cut than other pajamas by Fitwarm.

I loved reading about American Indian history. What a struggle they had to go through. It helps to understand where some of our blood line came from
