Paradise Below Zero: The Classic Guide to Winter Camping (Fesler-Lampert Minnesota Heritage)

Very happy I came across this book.
I stumbled across this book and really like it. It is less of the procedural guide for winter camping and yes it is dated material, but regardless this information is valuable. The two chapters on clothing were very good and relevant still today, but I still learned a lot in most of the chapters. At a minimum they were thought provoking. This isn't a modern winter tent camping book. This is more of a book for the modern mountain man with a little Thoreau like messaging mixed in. I liked this so much I bought a few more of Rutstrum's books as I like to read about this thoughts on nature and the wild

Read this book when young and remembered it being an interesting winter camping guide. Now reading it again as an adult, I'm amazed at the depth of feeling and thought that the author has put into this. It's far more than just a winter camping guide, there's a lot of philosophy and interesting viewpoints as well. Well worth the read, even if one isn't interested in camping.

More of a novel than a guide
Though the book is informational and inspiring, I simply did not agree with this being titled a "guide", as apposed to calling it a Novel, on the informational side. Put another way, it isn't the expected front to back informational "guide," that I expected. Not to mention out of date in more than one way. The author refers to African Americans as African Negros, and claims that Timber Wolves are of no threat to man as they are afraid of our very scent, which I can assure you that in our day and age, and with the population growth explosion in the Northern U.S. and Canadian tundra, this is just not true, anymore. That said, from a Novel standpoint, this is a great read, if you will just see the inaccuracies for what they are, and take in the wisdom of this amazing person, who seemingly was one of the last of his kind.

Buy it for your cabin, RV, or just to read. Just buy it.
A relaxing read in winter whether you plan to go out or not. If you plan to go out then it's a must read for information and optimism about the great outdoors.

A very interesting book giving info on a different world and time
I think this book is very interesting. Its like looking into a totally different world of ice, snow, cold and human attitude. An interesting social and historical study without being heavy or tedious.
