KD Frames Studio Bifold Futon (Full)

I bought to replace a completely inadequate "sleeper sofa" in a travel trailer slide out. My problem was that the inside "length/width" side to side of the slideout was 73.5 inches. Everything including this is 74 inches or 74 1/2 inches. I looked and looked and looked and with metal, there is "no give" on the width. I finally took a hard look at this and figured since it was wood, I could cut it down...just enough to fit. So, did it work? Yes but... This is very well engineered and designed and that all assume you are NOT going to cut it down to size like I did. But you have to be careful. The best way, in retrospect is to cut BOTH edges and not just one off including losing one of the dowels on each side. That worried me for structural integrity, but it is a bit over engineered where all of the other pieces once together compensate. And in the end, it all went together and is structurally sound... I had purchased metal support pieces and extra screws assuming I would need them when I did NOT. I did have to do a couple of my own "pilot" holes to ensure a good bite with the screws, but in the end, it works great and is the ONLY thing that will fit. I now have a full size futon that extends out perfectly so when in "sofa" mode it allows the slide to move in without hitting anything. Then when you get to the campground, put it in bed mode with a good six inch mattress and a true real life adult can actually sleep on it...comfortably... I am very pleased and by having to adapt it with a bit of engineering/construction background, I was able to see how well designed and constructed it was for people who do NOT have to adapt it including cutting off edges and structural dowel fasteners. Great product AND, drum roll please, American made... And for what you get, pretty inexpensive compared to anything else on Amazon even before the tariffs. Including a high quality six inch futon mattress my total price was 398 bucks. I am impressed. The only weakness would be individual units where a piece might be cut where the grain creates a structural "break point" and a screw could break it or stress. But I see at least one other buyer who had this happen and the company responded on a weekend and immediately sent out a replacement part. So, I'm thinking they are aware of it and have excellent customer service to address it. This is due to their choice of wood and its intrinsic quick growth grain orientation, however tulip poplar is a great choice of wood for this overall, relatively inexpensive, light, good construction characteristics overall for this type of product. This was well thought out by whomever runs this company.

Finished putting the futon frame into place and a futon onto it not too long ago. Here is how it went for us: Everything arrived safely together, no missing parts and no damage. All the wood pieces seem well sanded and not likely to cause splinters. Wood grain was smooth and relatively even. If we planned on finishing the frame I think it would look decent with a stain or you could paint it readily enough. I would recommend finishing BEFORE assembly, although you would have to keep track of the parts a bit more closely. Even then, all the parts are pretty clear from their shape and where holes are located. Assembly did not take long at all and the instructions were clear and easy to understand. The only tool you really need is a Phillips-head screw driver, although a rubber mallet to tap things together would not hurt. Parts fit together cleanly and evenly, and as mentioned before, it is tough to mix them up. They even had an extra step to make SURE you got the pieces from the first couple steps right, which seemed like a nice check (maybe a lesson learned sometime). The only things I could think of to change about the assembly/design would be replacing some of the screws with a couple more Clevis pins and a couple felt pads. This way someone could disassemble more of it for even easier storage or moving it around. Maybe making it so you could take the seat and back sections off completely. The felt pads could be for the feet, just to protect flooring a bit from the wood. Totally just personal impressions though and neither are things that detract from the frame in my book. Once assembled the frame was easy to carry into the room where we wanted it. Not too heavy and it did not wobble around a lot like some furniture pieces so I did not have to worry about smacking walls or trim. Futon fit perfectly on it. It COULD be a little easier to lift to a sitting position (maybe I will put a pull strap at the center of the back) but that was mostly due to our putting it in a corner. Overall impression: Excellent. Looks good, seems sturdy, decent design, and has decent construction. Made in the USA is awesome and you really cannot knock the warranty although I am not sure how likely it is we would ever need to use it.

I was a little alarmed at the very small size of the box which arrived. I wasn't really prepared for the amount of assembly it would require. However, the instructions were very clear and I was able to assemble the first time, correctly, with no issues. A very good product, well-built and solid.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the product. The only problem I've noticed is that it doesn't stay in position after setting the angle of the back part.

I am pretty handy and it took me about 45 minutes to set up. I am currently sitting on it and it doesn't squeak or groan. The metal futon frame I replaced it with was about 50$ less and basically squeaked the whole time we had it, requiring constant maintenance. We will see how this wood frame holds up, but I have high hopes.
