Originally issued in 1997, Bridges To Babylon made the Top 3 in the US and number 6 in the UK. The yearning and sinuous "Anybody Seen My Baby?" and the mean and moody "Saint Of Me"--both Top 30 hits in the UK--in particular, showed the band remained at the cutting edge. Energetic rockers "Low Down" and "Too Tight" repay further investigation as do the three tracks sung by Richards, in particular the closer "How Can I Stop" which features another jazz legend, Wayne Shorter, on saxophone.

love it.
i bought this album years ago, and unfortunately, lent it out and never got it back. so when i saw it on Amazon, snapped it up again. which i'm doing with all the Stones albums that have disappeared over the years from my collection. Bridges To Babylon was always one of my favourites. i love all the tracks from beginning to end and it's not been off my stereo since i got it. i always love 'Keefs' contribution on the Stones albums when he does lead vocals, and i especially love his "You Don't Have To Mean It." he has a great voice. Mick does a great job on the tracks "Already Over Me." "Always Suffering" and "Anybody Seen My Baby" three of the slower tempo songs on the album, his voice is at its best when he when he puts the emotion in to the tracks. so if you want a great album buy this. compared to the music around today, the Stones definitely stand out after all these years. and will never be 'out of Time.'

Hmm a 4 or 5*, good sound quality, crisp, clean, pounding bass, driven guitars and soaring vocals.
CD ReviewA very good recording detailed and clear without being cold and clinical. The guitar amp distortion is entrancing whilst being over driven. The drums thump and rattle whilst the bass guitar clearly pounds away. The vocals rise above the instruments but stay as part of the team, they do not scream “look at me””. The only real weakness is that the cymbals seem to have been lost.I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.• Clarity – OK, very open and clear, detailed, but slightly confused sound when the music gets more complex and there is a lot happening• Channel separation – very good, left right and stereo image• Channel balance - excellent• Sound Stage – very rich and wide, excellent instrument placement• Distortion – non audible• Compression – good volume and frequency range, instruments do vary in volume• Atmosphere – studio but warm and intimate, almost personal• Bass – low frequencies – s sonic pile driver, detailed, ponding drums which have excellent tone, and timbre, have a clear “thump” The bass guitar is excellent, clearly identifiable and pounding away. Bass is not lost in the background mix• Treble – high frequencies – The guitars have an excellent sound being clear and well defined. Detailed and driven. No muddiness, the only issues is that the cymbal sound is weak.• Vocals – front and centre excellent but a bit breathyAs a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

Building Bridges with the Stones
I've bought this before as a cassette and have played it time and time again in my Landie (see below for current model). I used to play it before in my old Series III, too. This album was a departure from the standby Rock menu - probably at the insistence of Keef. No sense in itemising the tracks, just listen to it!

Very good album
Great music and pleasing to hear that the Stones can still put a great album together after all these years. Recommended.
