Loads of information. Great tips. Best book I’ve found. Great resource.

I bought this book over a year ago, and I will shortly begin brooding my 3rd batch of chicks using the brooder that I built following the plans in this book. I suppose I might have finally figured out much of this and pieced it together from other sources on my own, but Mr. Plamondon has it all right here in one little book. It was a good read when I bought it, and I refer to it over & over when I get a new batch of chicks. It has been a more important practical guide for me than any other poultry book I own.

Although I am a farm girl, and have raised chickens in the past, I am starting over after many years of not having chickens. Now I have a new chicken house and my new baby chicks will be here in March!!! I did not want to make any mistakes and lose any of them. this book is wonderful! It has so many ideas and tips that I had forgotten (or never knew!). I love this book and will refer to it time and again, Im sure. I highly recommend it, even for people that have had baby chicks in the past.

Great book, one of the best on the care of chickens. Combine his advice with compost bedding and a fresh air design (see 'Fresh-Air Poulty Houses' by the same publisher) and you can easily do away with the need for coccidiostats. Despite what the author claims they are not necessary.

I learned so much from this book. The author did a fine job describing the pros and cons of the different types of brooder equipment. This book is a must if you want to be successful brooding chicks. We built the electric lamp brooder on pages 61 - 63 in a couple of hours and have been successful. FYI - The box can be made smaller if you have 25 - 50 chicks. I also appreciated the behavior insight about chickens. Good luck!

This is a good book for a new chicken owner. It does give you a level of comfort and is nice to be able to refer to it when you have questions. I found it helpful with the time line on the babies from day one on to through week five. It is clear and concise. with good diagrams.

This book is very informative about ordering and raising healthy chickens. I highly recommend to anyone thinking about raising chickens that they read this book, especially if they plan on keeping them as pets. They will avoid a lot of frustration and potential heartache if they follow the instructions in this book.Requirements for very small to very large flocks are covered,and multiple methodologies depending mostly on scale as well.Also it is very informative about the different breeds and their relative characteristics.

i guess this book would be alright if you had never raised chickens before but then you would probably want a more inclusive book like storey's or something similar. this is more of a pamphlet than a book and appears home published with small pages with big margins and lots of pictures and charts w/lots of spacing all black and white. there is some useful information it that he tells what has worked for him but there are thousands of websites where people give this out for free. it can be read in a half hour or so. if you have money just to toss around then buy this book.

We made an Ohio Hover and it hasn’t been until I read this book that I really used it properly, and then with much success. Plamondon is thorough, answering questions and laying out the basics and beyond. We raise both meat birds and layers most years and have had some real challenges. I wished I found this book a long time ago. Heartfelt thanks to the author for this indispensable guide to raising chickens for the backyard farmer, homesteader and small farm.
