Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, Vol. 2 (2)

Spoiler-Free Review
Food Wars! 2 begins with Soma moving into the Polaris Dormitory, where he meets new friends and new challenges, but the heart of the book is a "food war" between Soma and Ikumi Mito, whose family has a corner on the A5 beef production throughout the world. How can Soma win a battle of beef bowls when he doesn't have access to the same high-grade beef that Ikumi does? And there's still the backstory of Erina Nakiri wanting him out of the culinary institute.Food Wars makes me want to be a better writer. The excellence of the writing coupled with the excellence required to compete in the culinary institute comprise a delicate balancing act, and Yuto Tsukunda's encyclopedic knowledge of cooking is fully needed to make this series as good as it is. I can only wonder at how good the translation is, because although the Japanese dishes are fully explained, I'm simply not Japanese, and I cannot fully grasp what the dishes really mean. I'm so excited about this series. *****

Very Similar To The Anime
If you enjoyed the anime series the manga storyline is very similar. I also liked the added recipes and the extras that they included. I found that it wasn’t hard to get used to reading from right to left and most of the flow of the book is intuitive. I only wish the panels had been printed in color instead of in black and white. It takes me about an hour to read from cover to cover.

Great series so far! Excellent cover
Volume 2 contains chapters 6 - 14 and includes some of the recipes featured throughout. Volume 2 is the continuation of Yukihira Soma's first few days in the Academy, as well as the introduction to some of key characters in the manga. It also features the 1st of many, in what the series is mainly about, Shokugeki or Food Wars.

This is where Food Wars started getting good
Everything that made Food Wars fun started with this volume. In the second volume, you have your school setting, cooking battles, the Polaris dorm and its inhabitants, and the icy aloofness of Erina Nakiri the tsundere.
