Vintage sound with moderate output
I took a $500 guitar and replaced all of the electronics with Custom Shop quality components. I researched pickups but had a pretty good intention of getting the SSL-6 set and I am glad I did. I am now hearing tones that I have heard on some of my favorite artist's recordings. With the volume knob turned back to 6 or 7 I can get a really good spank sound but with the knobs dime'd I am getting sounds that are stronger than my stock Strat pickups without any muddiness whatsoever. The guitar with these pickups is the one that I reach for now when it is time to get my spank on. In this situation, I wanted white covers but I can see wanting black on a different project but they are not included.

I have have some Texas Heat!!
I have a Collings 360ST that came with Lollar pickups. There was no punch with the Lollars so to keep with the Flat style, I installed a set is SSL 6's. I also swapped out the 250pots and went with 500pots and wow did this guitar come alive!

Not for neck or middle position
Got this as part of my HSS pickguard build with an SD 59 Trembucker. I should have listened to other reviewers. At first I thought it was ok sounding -- very bassy with a clear upper end. But it seemed abnormally quiet. After a few days, I decided to experiment and swap back to my original MIM Strat ceramic pickups. Oh my god....I didn't realize how much better the MIMs were for neck-middle. So lesson learned: Don't assume a high-end, high-power pickup will change things for the better. I've been playing for decades and have quite a small fleet of top-quality guitars -- an American strat, a Gibson Les Paul, 3 Ibanez's -- so I can speak with some authority on guitar sounds. In this case, the SSL-6 is not better than the MIM standard ceramic single coil if you are looking for Strat bell tones.

High Output, pluses and minuses
It's a good bridge pu but be aware that you sacrifice highs for increased midrange. Definitely results in less stratocaster "quack" in position 2 if that matters to you. If mixed with lower output pickups it will be louder in balance. I like flat pole pickups but will opt for the SSL-2 for future setups.
