Can this be used under the crystal litter in a Scoop Feee litter box?

I don't know as I don't use the crystal litter. I have a Breeze litter box for my cats and the pads worked so great in a multi-cat household that I re-ordered 3 more boxes!

Would this work inside a cat's travel backpack to keep both dry?

For short trips this would work. Pad is not thick enough to absorb over a longer travel time. You would need to check pad and replace as needed.

My cat pees a lot. How much cat pee does one pad hold?

I sacrificed one Amazon pad to see how much liquid it would hold. I ended up putting 8 cups of water in it before I became concerned the weight would separate the top layer from the bottom layer if lifted. The more water I added (especially the last 3 cups), the more the pad evenly thickened. It never thickened enough to be bulkier than the cat box tray is deep, so pulling out the tray would never be an issue, even if saturated with 8 cups of liquid. The top “flow through” layer felt relatively dry to the touch through the first 5-6 cups of water, and only slightly damp after cups 7 & 8. I attempted to wring the pad after pouring 8 cups of water into it. The pad was pretty heavy, and you could see the gel inside really bulk up and kind of separating under the flow through layer when moved. The little bit of squeezing I was able to do produced no water, but the weight of 8 cups of water caused the top layer to start separating from the plastic bottom as I started to try to wring, preventing me from giving it a hard squeeze. But when would I ever try to wring out a heavily soiled pee pad?? I’m satisfied I could easily dump out a wet (or actually saturated) pad without creating a mess. I only received these today, so I can’t speak to the odor controlling properties yet. I bought the Fresh Scent scented pads; tbh they don’t have much of a scent right out of the bag, and I also didn’t notice any difference when I poured water in it. Will actual cat urine “activate” that scent? I’ll write a review regarding overall performance when I have more info. I didn’t sacrifice a breeze brand pad to see how much water it holds - because they are more than twice the price per pad as these pads are - but I really can’t imagine they would hold more liquid, just based on the tray size and depth of their brand name litter box trays. If the only difference turns out to be the odor control, I feel confident I could figure out a solution that would still keep the overall cost lower than just using the name brand pads.
