I just replaced a Dyson upright Animal(purple) with the Dc39..... Is there an adapter that will allow the Animal attachments to fit the DC 39?

You've probably got your answer but you just call Dyson and they will tell you a part number or if the parts will fit on what you just bought.

does it use a hepa bag?

It does not use a bag at all. You unhook the attachment & empty into your garbage bag. The attachment can be washed out & dried then replaced on the machine. Very simple. I know I keep mentioning my arthritis but this machine is so easy to handle plus I live alone & I try to continue to do my own housework as long as I can (I am 78 yrs old). Hope you can enjoy your Dyson DC39 Multi floor canister as I do.

I am having trouble getting all of the dust out of the orange filter.I know I can't wash it,and I have used a toothbrush against the screenHelp?

Suzanne, I am having the same difficulties with this vacuum. I usually cannot get it open to take out the dirt and dog hair, so I end up pulling it out with my fingers - YUK! I finally was able to get the entire thing apart to wash it all and there is debris behind the screen that I have no idea how to get out, so I just kept forcing water through it...very frustrating. I am sorry that I bought this vacuum. It was a lot of hype over nothing.

Can it vacuum shag rugs?

As long as the rug is not a throw rug - AND the shag is not long and loose. It will pick up the loops and tear them out - or they get caught in the rollers. Personally I don't think this is the right vac for this kind of rug.
