How to sabotage your magick....
It is said by some that Jason Miller has "Shattered many myths" about magick and this may or may not be true, but what is certainly true is that in this book he attempts to shatter and discredit some very tried and true, workable ideas and techniques which thousands of people have actually found workable. For example, he discredits the notion of using emotions to empower magick and although not all styles of magick require emotional investment or "emotional transmutation" as some occultists call it, many styles do make use of this technique to empower magick and with great success. He also critiques practitioners who ask for simple changes instead of big changes as "Being afraid of success" etc. Well, what if I don't REALLY want to be a millionaire, living in a big mansion, with a boat and a huge garage full of cars? What if the magician merely wants an increase in pay or a bit more vacation time or a simple but well paying job which allows him/her more time to spend with family? It's up to each of us to decide what we TRULY want and use the magick to help us get there instead of pursuing goals that are not genuinely our own. Using magick for things that we don't genuinely want will rarely yield results. Secondly, the author instructs the reader on the difference between the way a "noob", amature, adept, and "master" phrases their request to a spirit. The problem here is that his idea of how a master makes a request is a request consisting of several requests, filled with caveats, all at once and this will only stifle your magic or spread it's power too thinly, and at worst, it will most likely cause your ritual to fail completely. It's ironic that this author places this type of request at the level of "master" because this is just the kind of request I used to make when I first started out as a "noob", and never got any results. On the other hand, when I learned to make requests that stated what I wanted while leaving room for the spirit to be creative about how the result would manifest, I began getting results consistently. Again, it's almost as though this author is purposely trying to sabotage the readers' magick. Yes, there are certain spirits that one has to be careful with because they have a very chaotic way of providing results, but the vast majority that I have worked with, such as angels and Goetic demons (using a workable system) are actually quite wise and provide results with wisdom and attention to what I truly desire, without causing havoc in my life. All that said, if this author is truly able to get away with making such detailed requests filled with so many caveats and still get results CONSISTENTLY, then he is a truly gifted occultist indeed! I know that there are a lot of Jason Miller fans out there and I've probably upset a few, but I'd steer clear of this particular Jason Miller offering if I were you. To be fair, he has a book called "Protection and reversal magick" which is quite good. For those interested in learning about spell casting, you'll be much better served by "The casting of spells" by Christopher Penczak or "The master works of chaos magick" by Adam Blackthorne.

... admit that Jason Miller is often hard to be liked for one simple reason
I got to admit that Jason Miller is often hard to be liked for one simple reason: He has been shattering a bunch of my (and I'm sure other people's) magical dreams for several years now. In my case although not wild, most of these dreams and wishes were simply unrealistic i.e. not rooted in everyday reality which I'm living in. So that is the huge value of this book. The premise that, if you want to really change your reality with magic, you need to get very real about that same reality, must be accepted and taken into account if you want for things to work out. It sounds simple but it is not and this book helps. It is written to make your magic safer, more predictable and effective. Jason Miller deserves full respect for his work so buy the book, read it, think about it, change some of your ways to improve your magic and strengthen your mojo.

Practical, accessible instruction
The Elements of Spellcrafting hits that perfect teaching mix, where tone and content both offer specific, actionable guidance AND push the student to further learnings. This is NOT a book of spells; this is a guidebook offering practical, usable advice to gauge your true successes, hone your craft, and actually see increasingly measurable results in your daily life. Although this obviously is a book, I truly get the strong impression that the last thing the author wants is for us to be sitting reading - he wants us to be up out of our chairs, active, thoughtful, critical and INVOLVED (in Jason's words, "[S]top focusing on the nouns of life and start thinking about the verbs"). This book gives both beginners and adepts alike the tools for such involvement. No matter your current state of learning/sorcery, if you want to bring your magic to the next level, add this to your library.

Excellent, as always.
Over 30 years in, I don't buy Craft books often. I have read hundreds. More than hundreds. There is only one author I still buy and that's Jason Miller. I just like his 'voice' and his perspectives, and of course his Magick. He has a great mind for it all and articulates it amazingly. Everything he puts out is fresh and authentic. There is a trend that's getting worse, and that's whitewashing the esoteric to make it more palatable to the masses. Tarot is now just a Psychological Tool For Personal Growth and in the craft The Threefold Law hides around every corner. Not in Jason's books. Matter of fact, well researched and well spoken. And, most importantly of all, if you do the work, you get results. The Elements of Spellcrafting is a fine edition to his growing library of titles. Want to be a better magician and a smarter person? Read all of them!

BUY A BUNCH OF HIGHLIGHTERS to go with this book.
This is quite possibly Jason's best work to date. As a student of his, I took the audio class that preceded the book, so was expecting just regurgitation of that material. I WAS WRONG. The 3 hour class was terrific, the book is deeper. From the first chapter it hooks you & challenges you. My highlighter was running out of ink by page 33. This will become rewired reading for my students. Buy the book!

Innovative, practical advice that will upgrade your spellwork
It’s always a delight to find an original thinker in any field, but particularly in magic, a subject which seems to invite a great deal of theorizing and pontificating, too much of which is simply regurgitated material. This book, based on the author’s extensive, cross-cultural adventures, decades of magical practice, and what is clearly a long-term habit of thinking things through, offers both beginners and advanced magicians a lot to consider about their own magical practices and methods and how they can be improved. This is a book of concepts, not spells. Ideas, not lists of materia. But the advice is eminently practical, and the book is streamlined, well organized, and fun to read. It’s not a beginner’s magic book, though I think all beginners should read it. It is definitely a book that belongs on the shelf (or e-reader) of anyone who takes magic seriously.

Wonderful book
As always Jason Miller has created another amazing book. Full of information and guidance for the untrained witch. Even those experienced witches can forget the important factors of the craft and how to cast spells properly. Here he teaches techniques that will increase your spells success rate, and trust me the techniques work! Thank you Jason, for another wonderful book.
