Does it cut the grass evenly in mower mode? or does it leave visible rows or tracks?

This really isn't suited as a "main mower" unless you have a very, very small area to mow. While it will certainly cut evenly, when you move slowly, it will not cut evenly if you attempt to "rush" through the job. This really is designed as what I'd call a "detail mower" rather than as a whole-yard-mower. Basically, mowing with this is slightly easier than mowing with a traditional weed-eater, but remember, you're still using a weed-eater... just one with the string held parallel to the ground at a fixed height. As for "leaving tracks," you'll see less than you will with a heavy mower (particularly if you have wet, soft soil). But, if you push through the grass too fast, it will not totally cut the grass and you'll see "swirl marks" along your mowing path.

What size string? My B&D uses .06, I want a heavier nylon string.

As a typical man, I normally disregard directions, and take the long way home to solve issues on my own. :) I have learnt 2 things using this mower. 1. You can use the larger size line, however it may not feed properly, and is harder to wind on the spools. 2. I bought one set of the AF-100 spools, but instead of reordering over and over, I also bought a spool of bulk line and rewind all 4 at once. It takes 10-15 minutes to wind all 4 and I am set for the next 6 months or so, depending on use. In my mind this saves money and works for me. Yes, rewinding them can be a challenge and "NOT" to be tried after a few beers, the result is not as desired. Using larger line pointed out another flaw, if you will. If you look at the bottom of your mover after you have cleaned it, you may see a tab of plastic which has been created from the line contacting the mower base as it pays out new line. I am waiting to see if it will eventually cut the entire base. A metal tab or thicker part would have been good here as prevention. lt

I will be going home soon from a hip replacement is this very easy to use to cut the grass? I will have some restrictions for a bit.

The chemo wiped out what little knee cartilage I had. That why I bought mine. Very light wright handle length is adjustable but my 6’5” tall brother didn’t find it long enough for him. I carry a small paint brush in my tool pouch. I mow, it’s getting the spot I want done to suit me. I tap on the orange lever on the back to turn it into a weeder. If the grass is tall, wet, thick, it can build up around the edges were the weeders fits back into the deck. I grab the brush, clean off the grass, weeder goes right back into place and I’m back to mowing again. A friend said she had to step on that little lever to get hers to sit back in until she tried the paint brush. You’ll love it. Any piece of yard equipment I own had some little something I’ve had to learn. But 2-3 seconds to fix this issue. Wow!

how low to the ground can it trim, 1/2" less?

The mower frame has 2 heights. The lowest one might be 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. The higher setting is maybe an inch or a little over. If you're using just the trimmer, you can go as close to the ground as you want.
