Quality Read for Teens
Rose is an orphan who doesn't let living in an impoverished orphanage interfere with her dreams of independence. She shows a great strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds and an evil witch who drinks the blood of children to stay young. What more could a reader ask for. You are drawn in from the very first page and I was disappointed when I got to the end and had to stop reading. The story ended well but I wanted more. I immediately went looking for the second book and can't wait for the third.

3.96 Stars Overall - Charming read about friendship and more...
I have to say, I'm actually impressed with how good this one was, to be honest I wasn't expecting much. While it lacks the depth and some of the mischievous charm of Harry Potter, and it lacks the dark, dry humor of Ronald Dahl, it was a really nice little story. Series are often hard to judge by their first installments and it's easy to overlook even _Harry Potter's_ first book lacks some of the depth of the rest of that series. Rose is an orphan newly hired (mostly) downstairs maid for an alchemist, Mr. Fountain. Overall, she doesn't experience as much day-to-day cruelty poor Harry Potter and some of his fictional orphan cousins. She's really treated rather well, with the exception of Susan, an older maid in the household. The rest of the staff treats her well and she even makes friends, somewhat reluctantly with Mr. Fountain's apprentice and spoiled daughter and they are aided by a talking, magic-wielding cat named Gus. Content-wise there isn't much for parents to be concerned about other than some cutting and blood-letting by the main villain. I suggest that parents who are concerned read it first before giving it to little ones, but I always would make that recommendation. There are nice threads in this book about personal power (magical and not), friendship, loyalty, and so on.I do wonder how much the text was "Americanized" for the US. The text seemed a little lacking in the charming British-isms. I really don't understand why publishers so readily cut and change text, instead of using the linguistic differences as a teaching tool accompanied by some notes or something. Seems to me, especially with YA books, to be a lost opportunity for some cultural exchange and learning... I did find the author's web site and she did mention editing, so...I'll probably be back to read book two of Rose's adventures, once i get some other purchased books scratched off my list. Hopefully by then, books three and four will be out in Kindle format here at Amazon.

Best kid's book I've read!
I absolutely LOVED this book! My 7 year old daughter and I couldn't put it down. I know a lot of other reviews are saying it's not geared for younger kids, but my daughter understood it was just a book and not real. She's watched all the Harry Potter movies, which are probably freakier than this book. It reminded us of a cross between Annie and Harry Potter. It was really great and we can't wait to read the next one!

A Strong Girl Heroine!
This was a GREAT book! Fantasy is not my favorite genre, but Holly Webb hooked me! The author did a great job of taking us along on the adventures of Rose, a poor orphan girl. I appreciated that the magical forces in the book were believable, and that it was still subtle enough that you could focus on the story, not the fantasy. She did, indeed, have a great story line!

Harry Potter lite
A young girl discovers her magical talents in this delightful historical fantasy for young readers. Rose's heart's desire is to leave the orphanage and find a place in service so that she can earn her way in the world. A hard worker, with a soft heart, Rose's wish comes true when she is hired into the household of a local alchemist. To her surprise and dread, it becomes apparent that Rose has some magic within her, when all she wants is to be a regular girl who can earn her own keep and have an occasional afternoon off. But the magic might come in handy when local children go missing. An eccentric cast of characters - including a talking cat - some mildly suspenseful moments and an intriguing Dickensian setting round out this series opener which should appeal to young fans of Charlie Bone and Harry Potter.

magical maid
not sure of Molly Webb's Lily series and Rose series take place in the same universe or not but while this book's plot didn't go exactly the way I thought it would from the Amazon product description I found I could barely put it down. The orphanage was wonderfully down with characters brought to life. Love Rose's personality of just wanting to be a hard worker for the household she goes to work for when she is taken from the orphanage. The other characters that all interact with Rose are also well written and help build up the story of the universe Rose lives in and the people he interacts with greatly. The plot itself is an orphan who hides her ability to do magic because she just want to get adopted to a household and become a hard servant there. The master of the house hold is a magician and despite Rose protest some of the other servants want her to tell the master of the house her abilities and be properly trained in magic.

Grown up Holly Webb stories great for 8-9 year olds
Intelligent read for 8-9 year old girls. This story is thought provoking, fantastical and endearing. My daughter really really enjoyed it - loved the characters and whizzed through the book as she was so gripped by the story.
