There is a catch on the ratchet which can be a bit stiff to start with, also if care is not taken to spread the cable when winding in it can jam up on the shield, I recommend greasing the shield to help avoid this.

I have singled the wire up so pulls upto 2t over about 12 ft - if doubled for 4 tons then half that to say just over 6 ft.

Releasing the cable is a bit tricky. First you have to secure the load from moving of course, apply a little pressure on the cable using the winch handle, this releases the pressure on the locking pin which allows you to operate the release lever.
