Nice improvement over last generation expansion unit
A nice improvement over the old DX1211 unit. Specific improvements include tool-less drive trays that make inserting and removing drives quick and easy, simplified drive lights (one light per drive instead of two), MUCH faster startup time, and modular fan unit that allows you to quickly swap out a broken fan without disassembling the case and without any tools. It comes with the same short length of cable that the old DX1211 did, so like the DX1211, the new DX1215 needs to be situated directly next to the main unit it's attached to.The DX1215 is in fact the same exact case that the DS3615xs comes in, so they look perfect next to each other. You can attach the DX1215 to a DS3612xs, so if you have that older DiskStation, it will work fine. However, you cannot attach the older DX1211 expansion unit to the new DS3615xs, so just keep that in mind if you have a few of these things around.

Do not buy
I bought this to expand my Synology DS2415+. The box came beat to heck and back and it is blatantly obvious that the seller is just trying to pawn this broken item off on someone who is in no rush to try it and will get stuck with a broken unit. While this unit turned on automatically with the base unit as its supposed to, It never successfully linked with the base unit. A green light turns on when this happens and it never happened. Upon installing a hard drive into the unit, again, no green light came on on the drive bay and it was never recognized by the base unit. I tried two different DS2415+ units and a new cable and nothing worked. What a shame. The seller (Price Master Jay, or Peaceful Zone Limited, both business names are listed for this particular item) should be banned from selling here. The DX1215 is an older discontinued unit and the DX1215ii is the replacement.

Build your volumes very carefully.
It’s Synology what’s not to like? Great customer service, tech support is top notch, they really stand by any warranty issues I have had which are few and far between.

Good OS, but Synology Technical Support Needs a LOT of Improvement
Synology technical support leaves a LOT to be desired and must improve as they are shipping and designing larger and larger NAS units. Be aware their typical support responses are: 1. Are you using Synology official RAM? 2. Re-install DSM. 3. Backup all your data and reformat the unit. Unacceptable in 2016 with NAS units that support terabytes of storage. Synology Technical Support does not provide a professional level of support and I feel their reps are there to just close tickets. Revised 7/9/16 to reflect absolutely horrible technical support!

One nice feature is that when the unit is in hibernation ...
So far, this works flawlessly as an add-on to my 12 bay Synology DS2415+. One nice feature is that when the unit is in hibernation mode, this expansion unit almost completely shuts off, consuming very little power.

massive performance loss for Volumes inside DX1215
I have just been going through the process of adding a DX1215 to a DS3018. I then moved my main storage pool into the expansion unit and added two more drives to have a 8 disk RAID6 in there. In the DX1215 is as well a single SSD for virtual machines. After the pretext: Expect a significant performance loss for volumes inside the DX1215.An iSCSI Volume used via a direct 10G link to a Mac had it's read speed cut down almost 40% and renders the expensive 10-network almost useless. The so called Infiniband architecture is simply not up to the task. Volume inside the DX1215 are ok for archive but not as work drives any more.So to get back to the original question: Expect a significant performance loss for Volumes residing in the DX1215 expansion unit, especially for read. A fact that Synology fails to mention.Further research makes it clear: The bandwith of the Infiniband connection is here the same as a SATA 3 interface. No matter how many fast drives you add to the DSX1215 there is a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 600MB/s. In real life it's more between 500 and 580MB/s. Therefor volumes inside the DX1215 are not suitable for work that requires fast transfer of large amounts of data.Given the cost - very disappointing!
