Educational and entertaining. A historical movie with a fair amount of combat action.
Good acting by Omar Shariff and Jack Palance. This is a historical movie rather than a war movie. Don’t expect to see Che smooching some cute Cuban babe. Che’s first love is making revolution and not playing Don Juan. I like the ‘no frills’ approach - no unnecessary romances. It's all revolutionary business.I saw this movie more than 45 years ago. I remembered the movie as having a lot of political talk but little action. Not true. My memory of the movie was flawed all these years. After watching the DVD, I can assure those thinking of buying the DVD that ‘Che’ has a fair amount of shooting scenes. The movie portrays Che as the action man in the Cuban revolution. Although a medical doctor, Che takes the lead in attacking and killing the enemy. His tenacity helps Dr. Castro in toppling the Batista Government. This movie has Omar Shariff in the role of Che Guevara and the handsome Egyptian looks the part – he does look Latin American. He is convincing as Che. Omar has been miscast in some movies like ‘Genghis Khan’ (but not as ridiculous as John Wayne) and ‘The Night of the Generals’ where he plays a Wehrmacht major. The movie does not glorify Che. It shows him as a ruthless revolutionary stirring up trouble outside his home country in Argentina. After helping Dr. Castro in ousting President Batista, he wants more revolution – continuous revolution. Mao Tse Tung must have been his role model. In his final days in Bolivia, he is given a reality check by a Bolivian revolutionary – why should Bolivians and other South Americans be led in their cause by Cubans and an Argentine? He is also told off by a peasant – Che talks of freeing peasants from oppression but he and his trigger-happy revolutionaries are the true oppressors. Unable to recruit many Bolivians, his days get numbered. Counter-insurgency troops capture him and it is hasta la vista Che.

Fairly accurate but soft-pedals Che's murderous approach to guerilla warfare
This is a fairly accurate rendition of the revolutionary life of Che Guevara. Guevara was indeed one of Castro's chief lieutenants when Castro was maneuvering to seize power in Cuba. After that, Guevara was a disaster. His foreign policy ideas led to ruin, and his socialist policies concerning the economy led to the usual socialist inefficiencies and failure. Eventually Guevara left Cuba to try to foment revolution in South America, starting in Bolivia, where he failed spectacularly.Guevara's Bolivian expedition was, by any objective standard, a complete failure. Even the Bolivian communist party repudiated Che Guevara. The peasants that he sought to "liberate" regarded him as nothing but a bandit and thief, and eventually it was local peasants who turned him over to the Bolivian Army, which promptly executed him. If there is anything inaccurate about this film it derives from the fact that Che is played by Omar Sharif, who is hard not to like. Che himself, in real life, was easy not to like. No doubt this is why Castro and the Russians kicked him out of Cuba and why the Bolivian peasants turned him into the authorities.Omar Sharif is, as always, appealing in any role, but he successfully plays the role of a Guevara who is far more in touch with his ideology than with reality. Jack Palance plays a somewhat passive Castro. My overall opinion of this film is that it is entertaining and reasonably persuasive as regards what Guevara was really like. Whether Castro was as dependent upon Guevara during the Cuban Revolution as this film depicts I cannot say. In any case, as a die-hard anti-Castro Capitalist, I enjoyed this film. RJB.

Made when the Commandante was dead only for 2 years
Guevara was the enforcer fanatic ideologue of the early Castro regime.Palance as Castro was adequate but for my money the best Castro was always the actor best known for Columbo the detective (Peter Falk). The star here remains Omar Sharif whose physical resemblance to the guerilla fighter Che is stunningly realistic. Oddly, we don't see any US troops in this film. The Bolivian troops who captured Che were trained by US Army RANGERS (and likely Green Berets). For me, a much better depiction of Che is in the novel "See You Later Alligator" penned by William F Buckley Jr. It's the early days of the Castro regime and Che's CIA nemesis is Buckley's very own American super spy, Blackford Oakes. The verbal jousting between Guevara and Oakes brought a much greater dimension to the character.

Okay - If You Buy it as a 60s Cult Film
Hopefully the main reason for anybody watching this film in our present time is an interest in actor Omar Sharif. Who did what he could with the script. Anybody with a real interest in the subject of the film should be warned that this film dates from 1969, and is very much of its time. This is an American propaganda production from the height of the cold war. If you are clear about all this, this may be an interesting curiosity. Nothing wrong with watching it if any of this appeals. However, if you want to learn about Che Guevara the man, there are far better and more recent films available. Both The Motorcycle Diaries and Che Part I and Part II (starring Benicio Del Toro in the title role) are far superior.I personally bought the DVD as the curiosity it is, fully aware of all the caveats, and I rated it accordingly. The disc is fine, both picture and sound are adequate for a film from the time.

Great to see this Omar Sharif classic again
A film I first saw in the sixties and liked very much. I liked it and didn't expect to get it for the price I paid. I thought Che gave Sharif a great part to display his acting abilities. A film I never thought I would come across again.

dated..
It is a bit of a dated film... but, having said that...It must have been quite good for it's day... it hasa news-reporting style about it... but a bit lackingin scope... watch the new one instead...

Che Review
The movie was very good. Jack Palance did a superb Fidel Castro. Omar Sharif's Che was good also.I was satisfied overall with the movie, but the PAL format was a problem. After some work a viewable DVD was created, however, even then the DVD would not play on all DVD players. On my DVD player the movie was reduced to say one-half of the viewing area of the monitor - a problem, but I was able to see the entire movie.
