The Zulus at War: The History, Rise, and Fall of the Tribe That Washed Its Spears

Comprehensive, balanced, and enlightening
This was a well documented and balanced account of Zulu history. There was a lot of information to cover but the authors did well at presenting it in an understandable and cohesive format.I knew nothing about the Zulus before this book other than the old movie I watched as a kid. The content was fascinating to me. I loved the common themes of power struggle, cultural identity, and strategy that you see repeated through all of history, along with the uniquely Zulu customs and societal priorities that were all new to me.The story is definitely a more tragic and frustrating one, but enlightening and important, whether you have specific ties to African history or not.

Very well written. No useful maps
Great text. The lack of adequate maps especially re: the battles is not good. No photos either but I can live with that.

A Great Book!
With this book I learned my first lessons of white colonialism and black inter clan relations in an African country. I am richer for my reading of it.My only complaint is the deficit of readable maps. BI spent a lot of time with Google maps, wishing there were more maps included with the text. Ideally, for me, maps should appear with the relevant text.Initially there are descriptions of Zulu savagery that stalled the fostering of empathy with the Zulus; toward the end of the story, there were tears on my cheeks because the described injustice imposed by the colonizers on the Zulu clans was relentless, technologically unbalanced, and morally indecent. I am very glad I read this book and continued to read it to the last page. Thank you to the authors.

I read many history books
This was a little different from the books I have read in the past in that it concentrated on various battles fought by the Zulus. But it was well worth the read! The author left nothing out in regards to culture, and explanations as to exactly how and why things happened as they did, only downside to the book was the lack of readable maps.

For the scholars among us.
Perhaps too scholarly for the casual reader as it gets almost biblical with all the begats. Nevertheless I found it most interesting especially since it presents the Zulus in an unbiased way and exposes the ruthlessness of the Boers and the British in dealing with the indigenous population not unlike our treatment of native Americans. The conquerors usually write the histories.

Zulu History explained very well.
Excellent history of the Zulu wars for anyone interested in African history and Britain's involvement in that Continent. They did wash their spears in British Blood.

Well written a superb read a must for anyone in the Zulu nation
Absolutely brilliant although I have read several books about the Zulus particularly the wars, this book gave a superb insight into the history of the Zulus right up to the period when the colonial power Britain applied the use rule and divide

A good account
I enjoyed this book and learned much from it. I thought it rushed a bit towards the end, but that didn’t spoil it for me.
