A Welcome Trip Back Down The Years
Treated myself to this for Christmas and I enjoyed it so much that I just HAD to have Volumes 3 and 4 as well.I'd occasionally read the original magazines back in the Seventies, but copies were few and far between... especially if you lived in rural Cheshire. Generally, they were the sort of "book" that I'd pick up on holiday when I found them in "spinners" outside newsagents in towns as disparate as Southport, Blackpool, Chester... and Stranraer! In fact, I can remember vividly buying one the "colorized" Giant-Size Treasury editions in the latter place in 1976... or was it '77?Anyhow, bottom line, as I rapidly approach the big six-oh I can safely say that I enjoyed the Omnibus a lot more than my 15 or 16 year old self might have done. At that age, I clearly did not recognise the sheer genius of Alfredo Alcala's inks or, indeed, the manner in which Roy Thomas threw himself into furthering the "Conan" mythos, both as a commercial product and a literary endeavour. It isn't cheap, but if you have that sort of cash available AND you love comics - or did in your far-flung youth - then this (and it's successors) may well be for you!Highly recommended.

First rate
Superb quality book with a long introduction by Roy Thomas about the ins and outs of production. The art is first rate throughout with classic tales. Great reproduction of the covers and inner pages. Only disappoint (and I guess for licensing reasons) all the stories listed for Solomon Kane etc are missing (I can only Marvel works out something there and brings out a 'Solomon Kane', 'King Kull' 'Red Sonja' etc omnibus at some point (as much as I love the Dark Horse volumes)

Too Expensive
This book is great if you are an old Conan fan like me, it is great to see these old comics once again and it is a heavy tone, however the only downside to this is the price, what you get is worth what you pay but what you pay is way to much unless to pr ordered with the price promise Amazon has and even then is is expensive. It strikes me that the publisher feels that by sticking the Marvel name on it they can charge you three time as much.

Excellent

Sword and Sorcery at its best
As you already have read in the synopsis, SSoC is by far the best. I was a bit too young for the 1st early issues, but after having been given an issue I was hooked. As a grew older I learned about Robert E. Howard, then paid more attention to the artist's and inker's as I developed favorites over the years. Even though I didn't have all of the first prints, my original collection was lost due to flooding. The issues I was able to save I didn't want to open as they are still in good condition. I missed reading them greatly. Dark Horse's edition published the main stories, which was fine as I have them all, but they lacked the pinups and the backpage stories. Even though Darkhorse is a cheaper route, you'll be missing out on a great many things that Vol. 1 and Vol 2 Omnibus covers. Some may frown that SSoC is black and white. I don't as I love the art as much as the stories. Every cover is in color and shown. The pages is high quality paper, even better than the 1st prints, as you won't find print smudges or missing text. Swords & Scrolls is included in these volumes. Pinups as well. What I find truly special is Roy Thomas' prologue giving the reader insight into what was happening during that time to put every issue together and send to print. Which I believe is unique to these volumes. Even a bit of politics regarding decisions involved. SSoC in my opinion faithfully reproduces Robert R. Howard's novels in comic form, and even better, not have the Comics Code Authority looking over their shoulder. For those that may have the first prints but miss the stories, get these volumes to preserve those first prints. You will not be disappointed by CROM!
