An enjoyable read
I enjoyed this book. I loved all of the characters, except for Nathaniel Greene, and was cheering for all of them. I loved Julia and Phoebe especially, and Phoebe’s little country sayings made me smile:). The only thing I didn’t like was, and I believe another reviewer said this, the ending happened too abruptly. I really wanted to find out if Julia had a good ending. Did her parents disown her for her choice? Hopefully not. I didn’t like the Nathaniel character because of how he tries to control Julia’s life and make choice for her and he reminded me of my very own ex- hehe. This is a good book- you are drawn into the story and Mrs. Austin did such a good job writing this book. I recommend it for an enjoyable read.

really enjoyable
I loved the characters in this story, I love the writing and history but I didn’t like the silly and predictable outcomes of some of the trials of the novel. In any case I enjoyed it as being a good read.

Super great read
I love all of Lynn's books. This series is spellbinding and historically told in a way that personally draws one into the story. This was a great read. I look forward to Book three.

5 star great story worth reading
I did not want to put the book down from page one. Lynn Austin is a terrific writer. I have enjoyed everyone of the books I have read by her. The first book "Candle in the Darkness" was fabulous from the Confederate point of view. This book is written during the Civil war period from the Union point of view. The characters are all believable and you begin to visualize their life during that period of time. Julia Hoffman a very rich girl who becomes the person the Lord wanted her to be when she became a nurse for the Union Soldiers. She realized what Nathaniel Greene said about Julia. " The true assessment of most of the young ladies in Miss Hoffman's social position. They can't or won't do a thing for themselves, whether if it's combing their own hair or fixing a cup of tea. And their works of charity are always about themselves, done for selfish motives. " etc. Julia lies to become a nurse, but she wanted to prove Pastor Greene wrong. Instead she finds out his words could never be truer. The war and the events that happen through the war change her life and motives to be the clay in the Lords hands. While reading about Julia's life, their is a second story about Phoebe Bigelow whose three brothers leave her to take care of another ladies children while they fight for the Union Army. Phoebe can't take that life. She feels like she is ugly and no one would want to ever marry her. Her mother died when she was a baby. So she was brought up in a house hold of men. She did the cooking but they taught her to hunt, be an expert marksman, and do other ;work men do. She decided she would not stay with that lady and take care of her children. So Phoebe nicknamed "Ike" by her brothers cuts her hair, dresses like a man, and joins the Union Army in different state then her brothers. The men believe she is a man who likes her privacy. Ted and Phoebe become close friends. In fact Phoebe learns what is love. Her life is changed when Nathaniel Greens gave her a Bible. "Ike" or Phoebe began to read i the Bible and the story tells how her life was changed. Julia and Phoebe later in the story, meet each other when Phoebe saved Ted's life and was shot. The Doctor knew she was a women and put her in and Julia's tent. Julia becomes her nurse. In the story, Julia finally wins Nathaniel's respect but she doesn't know if she wants to marry him. She loves someone else that is married and she knows nothing can become of that relationship. The reader also learns that Nathaniel Greene motives as a minister is not the pure motives of the Lord. He is always wanting Julia to think about what others will think of her being unmarried and working as a nurse. He feels it is wrong for her to be a nurse. Julia feels it is the Lord's will for her life. What happens keeps you guessing.

I couldn't put this book down. I never realized how devastating the war was for both sides. I had no idea. The characters were believable.

Good Quality Recording
I am very pleased to find this story from Recorded Books which are books of excellent quality and the individual discs are housed in protective fabric envelopes. I found this same story produced by Blackstone Audio which was of poor quality and the individual discs were piled next to each other in a plastic cover which caused scratches on most of the discs. Once the discs were scratched they skipped and were basically not usable. The seller described this audio CD book accurately as a discarded library edition and the discs are indeed in good condition. All in all this book was good value for the money.

Amazing
I loved this book more than the first one. I read this book till my eyes got sore and would go to bed thinking about it as it was that good.I loved how you went from a high classed lady to a poor women. The adventure they both go on is amazing. I loved the romance and drama and the history. You really felt part of the book. I also loved how they both meet but that's all I'm saying. It's really worth every penny and I'm definitely buying the last one right now

An interesting if at times heavy going story, I ...
An interesting if at times heavy going story, I just wanted to read and read it and did into the early morning, hard to put down. This trilogy is very different and at times harrowing as it's based on the American Civil War. The first book was based on those living in the South, this book based on the north and the third which I am now reading is on and by the slaves, definitely not a place to be.

Superb, couldn't put it down!
I had read the first book in a couple of night as it was just so good! This was even better and I'm about to order part three. Don't be discouraged by the low price, this is an excellent series and very well researched, I just love Phoebe Bigelow's character and it's great to see her journey from awkward girl to confident nurse. This would make a great film!

Love prevails
Brilliantly researched and written. This book opened my eyes to the horrors of the American Civil War, yet the hope of the gospel of Christ was thread right through. I loved the two female characters; very different backgrounds and personalities, yet united by their Faith and desire to serve.

amazing
I loved every bit of the story. It taught me so much about God's love than I had experienced. I liked the characters although the reverend's character was a bit unseemly from what I expected. However, the story captured well the civil war and how it was used as an atonement for the wrong done to the negroes before the abolition.
