A Beginner's Guide to the Classical Guitar

The book came quickly and was in perfect condition.The music is for a 1st to 2nd year guitarist. The pieces are interesting and different from other beginner books which makes it a good addition to my library.

I have played guitar by ear for decades. Now, I am learning to read guitar music, and have just begun using this book. (I took piano lessons years ago, so the general theory is familiar.) The author approaches the lessons with an appreciation of peoples' attitudes toward their playing, their instrument, their practice habits. He never talks down to the reader, and takes the time to explain necessary things we may or may not already know. The lessons are serious business, but very understandable. I think this is just the tutorial I need. The ONE thing that would have made it absolutely perfect is a spiral binding, so that clips are not necessary to keep it open on the music stand.

Lots of things I haven't seen in other instructions books--the "common problems and their cures", like striking the wrong string by having your hand in the wrong position, etc. Good beginner exercise songs, some from the classical repertoire, like Vivaldi. The exercises are written in musical notation, not in tabular form. So you'll have to learn the positions and where the notes are played on which string and translate that into notation. This is more complex than reading fret and string from the tab. Though I've read music for almost 60 years, I know that tabs are way easier on guitar but just like any instrument, you have to master fingering quickly to play music from notation. So you have to stick with this to be able to play from notes.By the end of this book, which is in progressive order, there are some fairly complex works like a Flamenco Soleares and a Malaguena. So stick with it.

I love this book. I am au fait with most of the beginner's method books for the classical guitar and I find this work by Jeffrey Goodman to be the best that I have seen. The book is very clear and very comprehensive. It contains wonderfully interesting pieces for learning sight reading and the basics of good classical guitar technique. It has an excellent selection of repertoire arranged according the key. There pieces are beautiful and intelligently chosen. The book covers music theory in such a well organized way that I am convinced that Goodman is both a masterful musician and a superb teacher. There is a You Tube site where one can watch a performance of the piece you are working on. Furthermore one can purchase on line a CD recording of the 77 solos from the book. Buy this book - it's an absolute beauty.

I once knew how to play a bit of classical guitar (about 40 years ago!). After having my guitar outfitted with new strings and a beautiful new case this book put the final touch on re-learning an instrument that I once loved dearly!

Understandability and Scope for instruction.

Outstanding basic guitar book. All the basic information and exercises needed to actually learn the guitar. Get this plus Pumping Nylon, take the time to let your hands and fingers learn a whole new way of coordinated movement, and you will be playing guitar.

Lots of easy to follow guides and trainings

This is a great book. It explains a lot of things, problems and how to fix them and it takes you along from one thing to another without making it difficult.
