This is a classic wooden ring clamp with tightening wedge. It has a flat end and a rounded end, both of which have leather insets in their jaw edges. As is typical of such tools, the wedge can bear regrinding to a slightly narrower angle, but like most it is perfectly usable as it is. The wood, including the wood of the wedge, has a smooth waxy finish, so at the very least the wedge would need to be lightly gone over with very fine sandpaper before use. I haven't tested the gluing of the leather jaws yet, but leather normally has to be replaced from time to time in this type tool.This is not the only style of ring holder. There are high tech aluminum, steel, nylon and composite versions, screw clamp versions, soldering jigs, pin set clamps, vises, each with many iterations and variations. But this style seems to be the one of the quickest to set up. Just put the ring into it, hand tighten the wedge, turn up the bottom and tap lightly with a light hammer. Then to take it apart, just a quick push with the thumb and the wedge pops out.And no, the clamp of this style that I've been using for over 10 years is doing just fine. This one wasn't a replacement. It was a gift for a family member.

I purchased this after being disappointed with a Third Hands tweezers. I do wire wrapping (jewelry) and needed something with a strong, stable grip. The Wooden Ring Clamp works perfectly for me. Nothing slips out if it and it is very comfortable to hold.

I can't believe I'd never tried a ring clamp before. For working with small things (well, I use it for rings), it's life-changing. I do wish, as other reviewers have pointed out, that the angle of the wedge was sharper, allowing it to more easily hold wider rings. Also the high gloss shine on the wedge needs to be scuffed up pretty seriously in order to get it to work well with wider rings.

I bought this after reading another review and was so glad I did, it's very handy for filing wire or doing any small job that you don't want harming your fingers. The wedge when shoved into one end forces the other end to grip whatever you're holding nice tightly so there is no slippage, no matter how small the item. I think it's great and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

This ring clamp does its job. It comes with replacement pads to put on when the first ones wear out. I have already lost the pads so I couldn't replace them when they wore down but overall a decent product.

The wood is nice and the wedge fits snugly but I was disappointed that a ring vise would not have any rubber cushion or padding at all where it will bite down on the metal. I think this will be ok for simple repairs but I'd never use it for softer metals or more delicate fittings. In order to make it tight enough to keep the ring still I'd worry that the wood would bite the metal and mark or bend it.
