Classic Steelhead Flies

Must have addition to any real Steelheading library
Every once in a while books come along that are not only enjoyable but truly important (even critical) to their related field. Classic Steelhead Flies is this book for truly passionate steelhead fly fishers. The book is a VERY rare combination of exquisite photography, passionate writing and unbelievably thorough research. Once again John rolled up his sleeves and took the time to dig deep in topic. For someone who has dozens and dozens of books on this topic it was incredible to see names and stories I had zero familiarity with prior to this writing. This book goes to the true roots of the sport and enshrines the true legends and pioneers of the sport. Names like Bradner, Benn, McLeod, Pray, Johnson and McNeese and so many more remind us what started this romantic pursuit and make so many of us pine for days of old. Finally these names are stories are captured and available to the future of the sport. Trey Comb's forward is a passionate tip o' the hat to John and his writing that few others, maybe no others, could ever hope to deserve. The photography is wonderful in and of itself. This level of beauty, detail and photo quality is not something you are never going to find on a web forum, instagram or facebook post... Each photo is literally frame worthy and the detail you can see makes it an incredible reference at the bench.Due to the rare combination of the exceptional quality in writing and the detail in reference to patterns and materials the book is currently migrating between my bedside and benchside on a daily basis.Research and citing are unbelievable. I literally spent a few hours just reading and rereading the Notes and jotting down books in the Bibliography that I must now procure. The book is deserving of a place in any true steelheaders library It will stand deservedly beside the writings of Combs, Haig-Brown and John's previous works- for all time.An exceptional book and truly a first of its kind...

Another Great Book
John's book classicSteelhead flies,is full of historyOn some of the very first flies used to fish for Steelhead here on the west coast.his knoweledge on the subject is the best.the flies mentioned in his book are a major part of the early fly fishing history, and many are still used today. these flies should be remembered, tied and used and never forgotten.Thank you John for this Book, and the knoweledge you have shared.

Classic Steelhead Flies
As with all of John's other books, this one is well written, well edited, meticulously researched and supported by beautiful photography. The past 4-5 years, I've only fished with (150 year old) Lady Carolines, despite owning a few boxes full of Klamath and Trinity standards. Now I've got many oldie-but-goodie patterns to tye as I regain contact with my Steelheading roots, and several individuals to add as my fishing regulars.Ordering was quick & easy and delivery was earlier than predicted. Thanks again, Amazon...

same fly tied in different colors
the snippets of history and names is interesting. however if you want something other than same hair wing fly tied in different colors look for another book.

"Classic Steelhead Flies" by John Shewey a winner!!!
A great accompaniment to a couple of other books, "Forgotten Flies", "Flies of the Northwest" and "The Best One Thousand Flies". The bonus was the tying tips and the instructions included at the end for a couple of example flies. Beautiful photography.

A great historical look at steelhead flies
I was very impressed when I received this book. A great historical look at steelhead flies. I am not sure of another book that has the history that this does. It has nice large photos of the flies and also some tying tips and steps. I would highly recommend this book to any steelhead fly tyer. Another great book by John Shewey.

This is a great cross reference with Shewey's Classic Steelhead flies book
This is a great cross reference with Shewey's Classic Steelhead flies book, especially for those beginning to tie the classic patterns as I am. The spiral bound book is a bit clunky at first but as you work your way through it and get used to it, it's just fine.
