The Sherlock Holmes Collection

Beautiful single-volume edition for a great price
This is a beautiful, well constructed, and finely printed volume of the collected works of Sherlock Holmes. These are my impressions of the book (mostly good!):THE PROS:* It is a hardcover book with a cloth cover. It has an elegant houndstooth pattern and simple cover design (as shown in the picture). It also comes with a yellow ribbon bookmark and a slipcase for storage. Overall I think it's a really attractive book that would certainly catch my eye on the shelf. It's one of those book designs that makes you want to read it.* The binding is cloth and seems to be very durable. Cloth bindings are, of course, commonly used on big books, such as bibles and dictionaries, that are large and heavy and need to last a long time. I think that's the goal with this volume as well.* The book itself is quite large: approximately 10 inches tall, 7 inches wide, and nearly 3 inches thick. It's also fairly heavy owing to its thinnish pages. In my opinion, these attributes qualify as good things. The entire collected works are here in one volume, which I can keep in a single place on my bookshelf, and use as a single volume when I want to take the book on a trip or read the stories to my children. But I see that this is a matter of preference (see my "cons" section below).* The text is printed on the small side, but I think it falls easily within the readable category (not always to be expected from a single volume edition of Sherlock!). See my photo for a better look.* The paper is nice, in my opinion. It's not quite as thin or glossy as bible pages, but it's on the thin side. Any thicker and it could never fit into a single volume.* The price is right. I briefly considered The Complete Sherlock Holmes (The Heirloom Collection) , which is beautiful and seems nice (complete with illustrations), but it is $60 and seemed on the pricey side. This Knickerbocker Classics edition is much more affordable, and has the added benefit of matching a large number of other collections of other famous novels.* Best of all, it contains all 4 novels and 56 short stories -- the full collection, printed in order of publication.THE CONS:* Many of the things I stated in PROS could also be CONS depending on individual preference.* Some may prefer to have their Sherlock divided into tiny, lightweight paperbacks that they can stuff in a jacket pocket or purse to read on the bus or at the coffee shop. This volume is not very suitable for that. It's large and heavy and would be MOST awkward to read on the bus.* Others may find the print to be too small. I have attached a photograph to this product page so that you can get a better idea of how it looks. I would say it's slightly smaller than most academic texts. Personally, that doesn't bother me. But older readers, children, or individuals with bad eyesight may want to look for one printed on a larger font.* The book is NOT illustrated. Again, to me, this is immaterial, but a large number of readers have become accustomed to Sherlock illustrations and take great care to find books that have certain iterations by certain illustrators, and so on. Keep looking if you want lavish illustrations. I think what you get in this edition is a plain, no-nonsense, quality binding for those interested merely in reading.Overall, I think it's a great edition for buyers with certain preferences. If it meets your criteria, I recommend it with five stars.

Each of these six volumes is VERY SMALL compared to an average hardcover book
This review is for The Sherlock Holmes Collection: Slip-cased Set HardcoverI'll give this five stars for design, packaging and because it does contain the original Strand Magazine illustrations by Sidney Paget (and possibly others.) The package is, in fact, rather beautiful. But potential buyers should be aware that each of these six volumes is VERY SMALL compared to an average hardcover book - each book is the size of a small paperback (7" x 4 3/4"). I bought this collection because the print in my 1986 edition of The Complete Illustrated Sherlock Holmes was now too small and dense for my aged eyes and I was a bit worried at the size of these books when the box set arrived. Thankfully, the font used is clear and large enough for me. Might be a consideration for those readers with poor eyesight however.

The Definitive Modern Collection
My review is for the Knickerbocker Classics hardcover version of the Complete Sherlock Holmes, clothbound with the houndstooth design on the cover. It is indeed complete, not lacking any books or short stories.I find this to be an amazing volume of the classic Holmes works. Though it is rather large, it is very sturdy. My 13 year old daughter who is an avid Holmes fan and has read it multiple times (at least three at last count) carries it with her almost everywhere. This book has been in and out of backpacks, strewn around our house endlessly and after owning it for two years the binding is as solid as it was the day it arrived, so it must be sewn. Though it is on the large side, it is not terribly heavy and sits well in my lap as I read it to my 10 year old son for bedtime stories. The design is simple but tasteful, the page layouts with their rather small font are well done. Though the font size is small, it is still readable. There are times I wish it contained illustrations, but Doyle's writing is lucid enough to conjure any imagery and I believe at this point I prefer the lack of illustrations, the originals being less than stellar to my mind. I think we all have a good store of Holmes imagery in our heads by now and I enjoy my own imaginings. In addition, this volume is priced so reasonably, I paid under $30.00. The other modern, complete and hardcover volume titled the heirloom collection often sells for over $100 and I believe that the design on those hardcovers is quite gaudy in comparison. In short, snatch this up while you can, it is the modern definitive volume and you will so much enjoy it! Doyle's writing is lovely and descriptive and the breadth of the stories is impressive!

You can’t beat the price but read my review
For 99 cents I couldn’t be happier with the price. As far as I know all books from the Sherlock series is represented. I have two potential complaints. There are multiple narrators and some do not do a great job with the material. The other issue is that the segments for “listening” are just one big long recording grouped by file length, which can be upwards of 7 to 12 hrs long. You can’t navigate to a given book, and it’s near impossible to navigate to a book. If you miss the books name in the audio, you have no idea which one you are listening to. I’m pretty sure that the audio was recorded from cassette because it’s not super crisp. I listen to them when mowing my yard (3.5 hours)I’m used to listening to books such as the outlander series so I’m kind of spoiled with divine porter. I also don’t mean to criticize but just being honest.

Sherlock Holmes

Nice looking books but some problems.
This review is for the six volume printed version in a slip case. All of the other reviews here are for the kindle or audio book versions, so were of limited use to me prior to purchase. The six volumes are smartly and colourfully cloth bound and look good on the book shelf. Unfortunately, one of the volumes has been bound back to front and upside down in reference to the cover. I was amused by the pitying glances from other passengers whilst I was reading it on the train recently. I've only just started reading but I'm anticipating other problems with the text. One that I've discovered so far is that the text is quite small and some might struggle with it. I used to own the complete Sherlock stories in one volume and that was very heavy and cumbersome. At least the size and weight of each volume allows for reading in most situations.Anyone expecting to find all the Sherlock stories in this edition will be disappointed. One entire collection, 'The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes', has been left out. Admittedly, this collection, the last he wrote, is far from his best work and some have doubted Doyle's authorship of some of the stories but that collection still deserves to be included for the sake of completeness.

a very reasonably priced volume
This is a very large book - and the font size is very tiny - because there's a lot in it! It presents the "complete Sherlock Holmes" adventures, written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Given that you can purchase this book - in hardback - for under £1 (secondhand) I have to highly recommend it! I paid £7 for a new copy, and was pleased with the quality. It's not quite 'complete' (as a new short story has been discovered since this volume was published). And it's certainly not a 'deluxe' edition ... if you're after something more aesthetically attractive, I would recommend Sherlock Holmes 6-Book Boxed Set: Containing: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles & The ... & The Sign of the Four (Collector's Library) .Notwithstanding the limitations of this volume, it's a good quality book - with all the classic Holmes adventures in it. If you're after a reasonably priced edition, this is a good product. Sherlock Holmes 6-Book Boxed Set: Containing: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles & The ... & The Sign of the Four (Collector's Library)
