Story is wonderful, really really lovely. However, the condition of the book wasn't great. I knew it was second hand but expected a little better from the description.

The true meaning of Christmas?
Again another book I've used in school-this time as an assembly stimulus with 420 4-11 year olds who were transfixed by this simple story about friendship, gifts and nothing! My own children are to old for this now however they enjoyed reading it when I enthusiastically showed it. I will however make it a regular shared reading experience with my new granddaughter.

The Gift of nothing....
A charming story for young ones and adults too. Leaveing many smiling faces in its wake.

THIS BOOK IS PERFECT GIFT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE "EVERYTHING!"
This is one of those simple little books that comes along all too rarely. It's easy to read and teaches a great lesson about friendship and gift-giving.A good, moral book with the lesson presented in simple words with simple drawings of beloved, familiar characters.Written with style and humor too.I find it ironic that a book that teaches that the value of true friendship doesn't depend on gifts, should end up being a perfect gift itself!

I've already received 1 request for my "Gift of Nothing".
I gave this book to my 2 daughters, 1 granddaughter, 3 grandsons and my 2 sisters. As to date only my 13 year old grandson has decided what he would like his one day with grandma to be. The Walk on the CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario. We checked the internet and he is old enough and just requires his parent's permission.I explained to all of them that our lives are just so busy and as they grow older we need one day set aside just for a one-on-one.It will be interesting to see what the others choose to do. I know my one sister stated that she would likely want one day set aside to teach her the computer????? Time will tell but 2014 will be an interesting year just to find out where everyone will guide me.

Cute but not really for kids
A great theme but more of a gift book for adults than a children's book.

the gift of nothing

Best gift!
I read the Japanese version first, and wanted to read the original. Both are the best picture books ever! Cute but deep, and it ringers for a while after reading.

Best book - ever. Beautiful message.
One of my favorite books of all time. I use this for one of my counseling lessons as a school counselor. We discuss how the best gift we can give is the gift of love. I do this particular lesson with 1st grade students but discuss it with them each year as they get older and they always remember it. I’ve also done the lesson with 5th grade & the result was fantastic as well. We usually discuss our favorite memories first which all usually have to do with people we love and time spent with someone. This easily ties into the beautiful message of the story. The illustrations are wondeful, simple and the message is my favorite. I bought a hard copy for myself and I’ve had family come to visit and read it and they love it equally as adults.

Everyone needs this book.
My daughter gave my husband and I this book 2 Christmases ago. We loved it so much that we have given copies as gifts to multiple people. I feel I should have an inventory of 5 or so copies to have on hand when I need it. My husband and I discussed gift giving before we got married. The family he grew up in did it very differently than my family did. We threw out the bad ideas, kept some of the good and added our own philosophies to decide how we would handle the matter in our new family. As the case with many Americans, we already have too many belongings as it is. The best gifts we can give to each other is time together, rather than just buying something so the receiver has something to unwrap. On occasion a perfect gift idea does pop up. There is a gentleman, that I will refer to as Mr. Bob, who worked at the garden center here in town. For the 17 years I had known him since first going to the garden center when we moved here, he has been a rich resource for information, always greeted you with a warm smile, and remembered your name. He consoled me when my beloved step-father passed. Both Mr. Bob and my step-dad were avid birders and belonged to the Audubon Society for many years. He helped me choose the perfect tree to plant in memory of my step-dad. Last year I discovered that Mr. Bob was retiring. I called the Audubon Society to donate $50.00 in Mr. Bob's name as a retirement gift. The person at the society had a better idea of what to do with that money. Retirement usually means a drop in salary. This person put the $50.00 toward extending Mr. Bob's Audubon membership for another three years. What a wonderful idea! The Gift of Nothing (Special Edition) The Birds of America Vol.I James John Audubon: The Making of An American The Gift of Nothing (Special Edition)The Birds of America Vol.IJames John Audubon: The Making of An American

Such a wonderful book!
This is a really sweet book with a fantastic message. As with all Mutts cartoons the illustrations are perfectly simple and adorable, and the story is very special capturing intricacies of friendship, the impact of consumerism, and the importance of appreciating what you have. This book will be a staple in our household for years to come.
