“Revived” my knives
If you sharpen your knives along the existing factory edge angle, eventually you might find that the blade seems to refuse to get really sharp anymore. That experience is more likely if the factory edge came with a relatively obtuse angle, as is the case with some of my pocket knives. That’s because repeated sharpening along such edge angle is liable to make the cutting edge even more obtuse. Since I strongly prefer to keep my knives very sharp, such changes in the edge angle and the consequent loss of sharpenability initially were disconcerting to me, to the extent that I almost wrote off the knives in question as lemons in terms of heat treat. Eventually it dawned on me that such blades may need to have their cutting edges reprofiled into a more acute angle. That’s why I am glad to have found this sharpener: I use the extra coarse side to narrow the “shoulders” of the cutting edge and then the coarse side to smooth out the surfaces of the edge, and this sharpener with its diamond coating does a very effective job at this task (although patience may be required as many strokes on each side of the cutting edge may be needed to change its angle). Once the reprofiling is done, my normal means of sharpening can take over and bring the screaming sharp edge back to life. Using this approach I have been able to revive 4 or 5 knives in my collection, plus my wife’s kitchen cleaver, to their former glory. I also like the broad surface of this sharpener as it is less likely to slide off the tip of the blade - which may dull such tip - at the end of each sharpening stroke (in contrast to, for example, Spyderco’s Sharpmaker rods, which are much narrower and a bit harder IME to control near the tip of the blade).

Excellent performance, BUT
I purchased this sharpener as an addition to my DMT Magna-Guide Quad kit, to have an XC (Black) surface that is compatible w/ the system. I opened the butterfly handles, and noticed about 4-5 very shiny scratch marks on the Blue Coarse side of the sharpener. It appears the plastic handles have scratched some of the diamonds completely off the paddle! So, I decided to break the sharpener in on my Cold Steel Heavy Machete. Both sides worked quite well, and when I sprayed them w/ water to lubricate the sharpening paddle, no other scratches were noted. The machete itself still needs a once over w/ a Dremel, file, and crockstick to meet my standard, but thats not DMTs problem. These sharpening grits (XC-C) produce a rough, very "toothy" edge on tools, and you really need DMT Red (F) to actually achieve a good sharp utility edge IMHO. If you use this XC-C sharpener on your knife, (Take it EASY!, NO PRESSURE NEEDED!) don't expect to be slicing paper and shaving hair w/o a DMT Red (F) and Green (XF), or some form of hard white ceramic hone to complete the work. I will contact DMT about the scratches and update. Great sharpener, and highly recommended for preliminary refining of established bevels on knives and axes, hatchets etc., removing small dings and chips or careful first stage roughing in of a convex grind by hand, but it will be hard to use on curved knives like khukuris. The edge you produce will be far finer and sharper w/ DMT diamond hones if you use all the stone grits in progression obviously.

Cheap Handle
Sharpens great , I've been looking for one of these diamond sharpeners in coarse . It sharpens in a hurry and that is what I need , if you have time or retired with nothing better to do you can sit there and hone for perfection . While the sharpening surface is fantastic , the handles appear to be very fragile and I'm certain will not last long . for the price paid I did expect better . Will keep because even when the handle breaks the sharpening surface will still be useable .

Like a a fresh piece of 220/320 sandpaper, FOREVER.
I only wish I would have discovered this sooner. This stone makes all my other sharpening stones (aside from my DMT Fine version) pointless. The Extra Course side is I think 220 grit so just like 220 grit sandpaper it removes metal just as fast except it basically never wears out! The folding design is absolutely perfect for storage anywhere and doubles as a sturdy handle, they even put slots in the ends of each side so the stay aligned as you manipulate the tool giving you perfect control. The Course side is 320 grit and is equally great. For most people this will produce a very acceptable edge without the step to a finer grit.

A great sharpening tool you can carry in your pocket.
I picked this up to have a well rated sharpening tool with a good reputation I could carry with me at work. I carry a pocket knife that sees a lot of use, but also use tools on the job that need to be sharpened, and you don't always want to carry a full sized file with you. Fortunately, this folds and fits easily in your pocket. The extra-coarse side cuts a lot of material from an edge to get it back into shape from nicks, and the coarse side is still pretty aggressive, but also smooth enough to get my pocket knife shaving sharp. It's also done a great job on my brush blades, ditch bank blades, pullaskis, rogue hoes, and pretty much everything else I've tried to sharpen with it.

Great Sharpener on-the-go
Very Quality product, I've had them for over 5 years now. Still sharpened all my knives very well. But to get the razor sharp edge will depends greatly on the person who use it.

Excellent product - better to buy the double side like this
This is a great product. My only concern is with Amazon. The package that the product arrived in was open through no fault of the drivers it was not sealed. In fact, thanks to the driver it arrived safely. It could have easily fallen out. I’m sure it was just a one off, the product itself is excellent

DMT Sharpeners are the best
I got my first DMT sharpener in 1979; it was a blue coarse model similar to this one and it is still going strong. These sharpeners require no lubricant but they can be rinsed of grit with water after sharpening. This sharpener is actually two in one. The coarse blade is for really dull blades or when you want to quickly change the angle on your blade. If you really want to get the most out of this sharpener, Amazon sells the blade holding guide which makes sharpening quick and easy. i don't bother with regular old-school sharpening stones and oil much any more. DMT sharpeners are sexier than socks on a rooster.

Top Produkt - etwas hochpreisig
Mit den Plastikgriffen sollte man etwas vorsichtig umgehen. Der Schleifstein an sich wird sicher viele viele Jahre seinen Dienst leisten !
