Review of Hello Neighbor
HELLO NEIGHBORMissing PiecesCarly Ann WestReview by Author Roy Murry'Neighbor' is Nicky's story, who moves with his parents into a town with a burnt down amusement park. Across the street lives another twelve-year-old named Aaron, his parents, and his sister. Two notes that set the tone at the beginning of this somewhat creepy novel are words of wisdom from Nick's parents: "Lu, he's twelve. He is barely human at this age," and "Remember, the family makes you stronger."On the other side of the street lives the weak and disturbed family of Aaron Peterson. His father is living through a mental hell about what happened at the amusement park. The two boys’ bond, break into the park using their unique ability to unlock locks, and, in another event, get into legal trouble costing their parents needed monies. Split apart, the boy with the strong family ties survives. When Nicky tries to reunite with Aaron, Aaron leaves a bloody note for Nicky - I make bad things happen. What has happened? You will need to read book two in the series to find out.I don't recommend this novel for a ten-year-old even though there are some excellent qualities to the read. A twelve-year-old may understand some of the deep thoughts and words intoned.Note: I have helped bring up two boys who are doing well in their forties.

Strong writing, gripping
I wasn't expecting to like a book based on a kids ' horror game, but I wanted to understand what my students were so excited about when they talked about the game and this drew me in. The writing is so well done, the characters' full dynamic range of emotions and the uncertainty and fear not just of a spooky plot, but of the realities of life as a middle schooler - Nick is unsure of himself, lonely, worried about making friends as his family moves constantly, feeling lonely, but at the same time he's funny, enjoying fast jokes and misadventures with his new best friend, smart, figuring out lock picking and gadgets with ease, and a true friend to his troubled neighbor Aaron, determined to investigate what's wrong no matter how confusing everything gets. There's a lot of nuance in this book, a lot to explore. The end is a cliffhanger, and I can't help myself - I want to read more!

The book that inspired the popular app of the same title
My kids like to play the app so I thought it'd be fun to read the book together since it was the inspiration behind the game. It was not as fun as they or I had hoped but in the end, I think they did enjoy recalling bits and pieces of scenes from the app as we read through the book. They hate reading on their own but will tolerate me reading aloud and I had hoped this would keep their interest more than it did, but I'm still glad we read it together so that I could have a better understanding of what the game app is all about.

Spicy Neighbor
I love Hello Neighbor, and I'll say this: the game had a lot of "huh?" Moments, which I both liked and didn't like, but having the (as of writing this) four pieces that make up the story so far (2 books and 2 games) that flaw gets thrown out the window. The book is so fun to read and knows how to make your reader feel the suspense of Mr. Peterson sneaking up to you.If you need a holiday gift or even just feel like buying a book for you or a friend, you can't go wrong with this one.

Kind of disturbing
My son is a huge fan of Hello Neighbor. This book was really spooky and even my 14 year old was creeped out. The reason why I left out one star was that this book has a disturbing ending and it wouldnt be ideal for younger or sensitive kids.

Good book!
My 8 year old son loved the book! So I bought two and three, but he got bored half way into volume two..... So if you are thinking about buying it to a 2nd grader, it's probably better to just buy one volume at a time.

Gripping
My son tore through this book. I've never seen him so eager to go into his room and read. He was gripped from beginning to the end, and couldn't wait to read part 2 when he was done. It's an excellent prequel to the game that makes you want to run back and play it all over again.

Good for children aged 12+
Bought this for my 6 year old as he LOVES the video game. But this book is aimed more at young adults. He certainly couldn't read it himself and although I read it to him over the course of a couple of weeks, it was far too wordy for him and he was bored throughout heavy dialogue illustrating the inner workings of various locks. All very well for people with an interest in locks, but for a 6 year old just wanting some reference to the game he enjoys, bit of a waste of money as the references are just too subtle for him to grasp. In a few years he'll probably understand it more, but by then of course the game will have been traded in for something more exciting.
