How does this attach to a car seat?

It has a webbing strap which goes around the back of the seat. This length adjustable strap has plastic buckles (1 on each end) which push into the plastic retainer buckles on the actual tray. The tray can easily be removed by an adult by pressing the retainer buckles. The other strap can be left in place. The buckles are like the ones you would get on a back pack. The tray does the job of keeping things to hand and together. Tray will move about if child is restless and moving legs/knees up and dowt.

How compact does this go? I want to use this on a plane would it fold down and to what size?

It would fit in hand luggage or a back pack. It is the size of a small lap tray.
