Review While all four of the Mortal Kombat games have been released on Nintendo's portable platform, none of them have been terribly faithful re-creations of the arcade games on which they are based. I mean, let's face it: It's hard to take all those digitized graphics and toss them onto the Game Boy. Tossing the 3D environment of the fourth game would be nearly impossible. So MK4 on the GB is a strictly 2D affair. Many of the original game's characters have been stripped out, and the move count has been greatly reduced. Much like the other MK games on the Game Boy, the controls aren't very responsive. Special moves are a chore to pull off. The game's fatalities are done a bit differently than the fatalities in the previous games. When you perform the move, the game cuts away to a short, grainy animation, presumably digitized from the arcade version. It's a nice, quirky touch that brings a little charm to an otherwise uneventful game. People looking for portable fighting-game action would do well to wait for Street Fighter Alpha, a much more responsive fighting game.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. wha the f... were they thinking?!?
it was fine when it was on the playstation, nintendo 64 and the arcade back in 1997. but whan it came on gameboy... its like they didn't try on the game, you'd think it would be like mk 2 and 3 but no. and the same music plays over and over and over again. once i got a flawless victory on the last guy on master II! and the fatalitys look awful ther in black and white! what were thay thinking??? well i give this game a sub-ZERO.

Not great
Mortal Kombat 4 is the first 3D game of the series. Despite that, the Game Boy version is still 2D.The graphics are good. The characters are digitized, like how they were in the previous games. The gameplay, however, can be unresponsive.Like all other Game Boy Mortal Kombats, this game would be short. You only get to fight 9 characters in Master mode, 7 in Warrior, and 5 in Novice. The best attack to use is just kicking. That's kinda sad. Usually, the uppercut would be the best standard attack to use, but no. Instead, it's KICKING.The enemy AI is way too easy to beat. I got through Master mode without any trouble. Granted, they can attack almost decently, but just throw 5 kicks and then it's possible he/she'd die. It can be glitchy when it comes to fighting Scorpion and Shinnok. You can still attack them even while they use their "Get over here" attacks on you. It doesn't look like you are, but then you see the enemy's HP draining. If you attack them by just mashing A repeatedly, and kill them, you somehow use your fatality. For some reason, I just manage to get addicted to this game. I don't know how, but I just ended up like that. There are a couple special stuff in the game when played on the Super Game Boy:-Special and cool-looking 16-Bit border-Colors change every screen to appropriate colorsWhen played on the Game Boy Color, the colors make very detailed backgrounds.Overall, buy MK2 instead.

Had higher expectations.
Mortal Combat was a game I played on Sega and at arcades. I was very excited to find out there was a version for the Game Boy. But I was let down when I realized it was very different from the versions I played. It just didn't feel the same.

Special moves are hard to preform
I Really like Mortal Kombat, and because My friend got me a gameboy color as an early birthday present, he gave me duke nukem and Mortal Kombat 2 to go with it, I needed more than 2 games. I want to play the N64 version, because my brother and sister in law are getting me one. I figured I'd get this one. I'm giving it 4 stars because the special moves are NOT EASY to preform. it is really strict. If the special moves were not hard to do, I'd give it 5 stars, but 4 stars are better than 3! another thing is that the fatalities are WAAAAAAY to easy to preform, which is a good thing for begginer mortal kombat players, but can be a bad thing for expert players.
