To test this units accuracy for distance, you need to first measure off one mile. I drove three different cars until the odometer showed I traveled one mile and marked it. You would think all three cars would end up all on the same line after the odometer showed I travel one mile but they didnt. They were all different. So I thought well which one of the cars is the most accurate, well none of them were, they were all at least 50 to a 100 yards shy of one mile according to using a laser range finder. I used a laser ranger finder that has an accuracy of +/- of one yard to measure off one mile. Forget the mile markers on the side of the interstate or the mile markers on the bike path to measure one mile. I dont think those are exaclty spaced one mile apart from my own experiences. After measuring the circumference of my tire in cm, I added that figure into the Cateye and rode my bike to where I marked one mile with the laser range finder and I still came up short. The unit showed I traveled one mile but I still had a little ways to go to get to the line I marked with the rangefinder. I then subtracted 6cm from the total tire circumference and entered that # into the cateye then rode one mile and the accuracy was right on the money. So you may have to do some trial and error to get this unit very accurate. The factory settings will get you I would say within 20 yards accuracy or so depending upon the size of your tire. 20 yards is not that bad, but if your a precisionist like me, you want it down to a yard or so. To measure the circumference, roll the bike forward until the air stem on the front tire is pointing straight up (six oclock position)then put a coin on the ground to mark it. Then roll the bike forward one revolution until the stem is back at the six o'clock position,then put a coin there. Measure the distance between the 2 coins in inches then convert that to cm, then in the 'tire size mode' on the unit look for the 205 #, click on that and change that 205# to the cm of your tire circumference. Over all its really a nice product, user friendly, easy to install and use, no complaints. If you have any questions, shoot me a message, Id be glad to help.

I've owned CatEye bike computers through many decades of road biking and this is one of the best and lowest-priced models I've owned. It doesn't do cadence, alas, but the other readings are all that I need and are displayed in clearly legible numbers. Setup is easy-ish and the unit has now been exposed to +2,100 mi. of riding -- incl. serious rain & blazing sun -- and the unit keeps going along looking fresh as when I bought it. Highly recommended as a v. good basic bike computer.

2023-08-22 I've been using the CATEYE Velo 7 bike computer for six weeks now and have been satisfied with its performance. Pros: Mechanical installation is nicely documented and easy to do. Watch some Youtube videos if you want additional guidance. Electronic configuration is covered pretty well by the documentation. If this is your first time setting up a single button electronic device, you might need more than one attempt before you get the hang of it. There are Youtube videos that are helpful. The display window and characters are large and easy to read. Larger than most of the other computers I considered purchasing. Though wearing polarized sunglasses can make it difficult to see. Use while riding. A single press of the button cycles the computer through its various displays. A long single press resets all of the parameters except for the odometer and clock. A number of reviewers report not being able to pre-set the odometer total distance (ODO) to a value greater than 0, or that it resets to 0. I have not experienced either of these problems. Cons: Wearing polarized sunglasses does make it hard to read the display at angle I have it installed on my bike. Not a problem for me since I do not wear polarized sunglasses. Unknowns: Durability of the mode button. Battery life. They claim a 3 year battery life, which is one of the reasons I purchased a wired bike computer. My wireless bike computers never have batteries last more than one year. I hope to move this to the Pros section in a few years. Durability of the friction mount that keeps the removable display in place. I do not remove the display, so I am not expecting any problems with this.

I have this on my son's bike and he loves it. It does all the basic functions & he likes the fact that the time is right under the speedometer. The instructions are just a tad confusing to me, but I got it figured out.

My 25-yr old Trek bike computer died and I needed a new one and also wanted one for my 12-yr old grandson’s bike. So, I bought one of these for the boy, took a little over 30 min to mount it, and it was indeed easy. Easy to mount, easy to set up, and easy to read. It had all the features I wanted for him and me: current speed, elapsed time, trip distance, average speed, maximum speed, total distance since unit was installed, and clock time. Easy to rotate thru the displays with the large single push button and the display is clear, large, and easy to read. It does not integrate with GPS or other devices, or provide cadence or the gear you are in – just the basics and that is all I need these days and all my grandson needs. My only complaint, having now worked with two of these units is the SET switch on the back. You need a tool to push it in and it is fussy. On the first one it took me multiple tries to get the hang of it, but the SET button is something I will probably not need to use again. When we ride together, side by side, we race and read off our speeds to each other, and the two units agree within about ½ mph. I mapped a recent trip on Google maps and the computed mileage was within a few percent of the odometers. Apparently, the calibration worked well. On his bike I simply used the wheel size and on mine I actually marked off the distance on the garage floor for one rotation of the tire. Both worked within the accuracy we need. Happy grandson and happy granddad. We’ve been using them for a month or so and all is good.

The instructions are okay but they leave out some steps. The magnet and sensor must be installed on the right side of the bike. The wire between the sensor and the display base is not long enough to mount the sensor on the rear wheel. The magnet mounts on a wheel spoke and the sensor mounts on a fork. As you go radially inward from the outside of the wheel to the hub, the distance between the wheel spokes and the fork decreases, so you have to find the "sweet spot" where the distance between the magnet and the sensor is 5 mm (3/16 inch) or slightly less. The wire ties that come with the speedometer/odometer are light duty (0.10 inch wide). They must be used to mount the display base because larger wire ties will not fit through the slots in the display base. But for all other wire ties, I recommend heavier duty (0.19 inch wide) wire ties to make the installation stronger. Use sunlight resistant (black) wire ties. Use plenty of wire ties but make sure you leave slack in the wire in the right places to allow the wheel to turn all the way to the left and right without pulling the wire taut. I set my speedometer/odometer for 26 inch to match my 26 inch bike. I checked the accuracy between mile markers on the bike path I use and the calibration was perfect. When you start riding, the speedometer/odometer turns on automatically. However, it doesn't seem to turn off completely (after a time period of non-use, half of the display goes blank). I cannot find a way to turn it off completely, to conserve the battery. The battery is supposed to last 3 years - time will tell if that is true. Overall, I am very pleased. This speedometer/odometer does everything I wanted, and so far it is working very well.

Ich nutze einfache (und auch teuerere) Fahrradtachos von Cateye seit >25 J und wurde noch nie enttäuscht, alle funktionieren heute noch. Ich habe ein minimalistisches Tacho für wenig Geld für das Cityrad meines Kindes gesucht, was auch mal verloren gehen darf aber kein Schrott ist. Dieses hier erfüllt den Zweck voll. Das Menü ist altbekannt und praktisch, hier wird mit einer einzigen Taste navigiert. Starten/Stoppen geht auch deshalb nur automatisch, deshalb ein Stern Abzug. Mich stört es gar nicht aber, da ich die älteren Modelle mit 2 Taster auch nur in dieser Modus genutzt habe. Die Montage ist einfach aber funktionell mit Kabelbindern; auch am Lenker/Vorbau (beide möglich, quer und längst). Das einzige Designfehler ist, dass das Kabel hinten rausgeleitet wird (Fahrerseite). Warum??? Bei den alten Modellen (eig. bei jedem Tacho) wird das Kabel vorne rausgeleitet, in Richtung Brems/Schaltzüge. Den ersten Regen hat es auch problemlos überstanden.

This works exactly as it should- I have one on my cross-country mountain bike and it took about 10min to install. Love that it starts up and stops with your activity (based on rotations of the wheel) and makes me push myself a little bit further than I normally would by seeing stats. UPDATE: I've also bought a 2nd unit and installed on my winter training spin bike- although there's no way to properly calibrate actual speed/distance on a spin bike, the relative speed/distance are something I monitor in a workout and the timer is also helpful. I would recommend this to a friend ;-)
