Definitely a must have!
If you have the Kitchenaid coffee grinder, these are perfect to keep the two separate. They work great! I do wish they could grind finer, but nothing a mortar and pestle can't easily finish.

The grinder was good, this makes it better.
The Kitchen Aide coffee grinder works well. It can grind spices. BUT; this is so much better than using the coffee grinder insert. If you look carefully at the picture, you see that the blades have been bent so that they get down closer to the bottom of the vessel, doing a better job on small spices. It also has a fairly tightly fitting lid that minimizes the dust created when really pulverizing some herbs and spices from getting out of the vessel. The vessel is also smaller which seems to keep the spices recirculating through the blades. I have never needed to grind more than once due to the smaller size however, it seems plenty big enough. The only problem you may have is stopping before your spices get to the powder stage and some uneven-ness of the resulting spice. I just tend to take it until the largest bits are small enough, assuming that with fresh herbs and spices, too small is not a problem.

Great addition to the Kitchen Aid Coffee Grinder
If you use the Kitchen Aid Coffee Grinder (BCG111OB) just for coffee beans, then the basic grinder is all you need. However, we grind other things such as flax seed, which the coffee grinder cup does not handle, well. The accessory kit with the spice cup and lid is perfect for grinding small seeds and spices. The blade design is completely different and does an excellent job of QUICKLY turning seeds into a fine powder that is much better for consumption, far better than the standard coffee grinder cup. Because of the lid, none of the powder gets out, which is a real mess with just the basic coffee grinder cup.

Works great for spices.

lid screws on loose
the lid doesn't’ screw on tight enough so there is always spillage.

Good product but…
Ok so this product works well. As far as taste is concerned its kind off irrelevant except to say that i prefer fine ground spices so that in some instances you may avoid an odd mouth feel being added to your food from large spice pieces. This easily ground my basil to a fine powder and I was happy about that. My main complaint with this product has nothing to do with the seller or the sellers prices specifically. The seller prices were right in line with the normal retail price charged by kitchenaid. I think the fact that I just spent more on an accessory then I spent on the actual machine is pretty ridiculous. The blame here would go entirely to KitchenAid for having such a high-price point on their products. The grinder I purchased elsewhere only came with the coffee grinding part of the receptacle and it cost 25.99. This item contains 2 of the receptacles for grinding spices along with 3 plastic lids, 2 normal and one with shaker holes. This is almost exactly the same thing as the coffee receptacle except it’s a little bit shorter allowing you to put a plastic cap on top of it so that the spices being ground don’t go all over the inside of the machine and the blade is very slightly different in shape. Its really kind of ridiculous to have to pay MORE for this specific container. Granted, for $30 this does include 2 of the containers and lids. I dont have any reason to need 2 of them so I would have been much happier buying 1 and spending $15. Unfortunately kitchenaid does not package them in single packs. I kind of feel like I got ripped off by kitchenaid. They clearly sell these in two packs only so you are forced to buy 2 instead of one, causing them to make more money. None of this is the sellers fault, this is just how kitchenaid does business. The product does work very well.

Waiting to break them in.
I bought the grinder purposely for this spice package. Yes! There is a method to my madness, lol! I have an electric coffee grinder and a manual one set up for my percolator, I will use my new Kitchen Aid when I want something really fast through one of my single drip filters or if someone wants to try one of our flavored coffees and they have an automatic drip. But I am really looking forward to making my own spice rubs and I have a recipe for an awesome sounding Honey Mustard that I can't wait to tweek up. It was a great price combo and I am so glad I was looking at the right time and Kitchen Aid has always had solid products and I have never had an issue with any of mine.

NOTE: This is an accessory for the KitchenAid Coffee Grinder. This Solidly built, high quality stainless steel accessory converts the KitchenAid Coffee Grinder (sold separately) into a superb spice grinder. It can grind as much as 3/4 cup of spice at a time into a fine powder in 45 seconds or less. It is equally as successful at grinding small amounts. I have ground coriander seed, thyme leaves, cumin seeds, cinnamon bark, star anise, allspice, shittake mushroom and more. I have made my own blends of poultry seasoning, cajun spice, creole spice, Asian five spice, and pork rub. It comes with 2 grinding bowls and blades, 2 lids, and 1 shaker lid. I think it is worth noting that I have been using a Krups coffee grinder as my spice grinder up to this point. My biggest gripe about the Krups was how scratched and cloudy the plastic cover became after only a few uses. Grinding whole allspice actually cracked the cover in about 8 places, rendering the Krups next to useless in less than 6 months. I also hated the fact that the grinding bowl was not washable. I had to wipe it out by hand using paper towels. The KitchenAid Coffee Grinder by itself is not meant to be used for grinding spices (the blade is the wrong shape and mounted too high in the bowl to effectively grind spices.) Do yourself a favour and make sure you get this accessory kit if you want to be able to grind spices with your KitchenAid Coffee Grinder. I am going to stand on my soapbox here and rant about the reviewers who have given this accessory low ratings because they either haven't read the product details before purchasing (YES you NEED the KitchenAid Coffee Grinder in order to use these!) OR they haven't read the instructions (YES, you need to cover the grinding bowls with the included lids before grinding!) It is unfair to fault the grinder because you haven't taken the time to read. Simply add the desired spice, seal with the included lid, insert the bowl into the base, attach the outer cover, press and hold. When done, remove the bowl and either use the spice directly from the bowl, or attach the shaker lid and sprinkle as needed. 5-Stars. I couldn't be happier.

Great value for your money. Kitchen aid has never disappointed when it comes to their kitchen aid appliances and accessories. This is only the accessories for the kitchen aid grinder. It does not come with the grinding machine. Comes with two grinder contains and and extra lid. Bought them to use for spice grinding and it works wonderful. I highly recommend if you already have the grinding machine.

I primarily use the spice grinder to perform a secondary grinding of my espresso beans. I use a handpump espresso maker and i require a very fine grind. The coffee grinding cup is good for drip coffee but does not grind fine enough. In both cases you need to stop grinding then use a spoon to redistribute the fines, then grind a second time. In my case i transfer from the coffee grinder to the spice grinder to achieve the desired espresso "powder". Four stars only because of the added labour, and that you need to make sure the plastic lid is seated securely or the grinds will get out.

These are great for spices, so they don't get a coffee odour, although of course being removable from the coffee grinding machine makes them easy to wash too. Both the grinder and these extra spice grinders weren't that cheap but they do a great job and I have nothing negative to say and I'm impressed how quiet it is.

The spice grinder is barely made of 4-5 parts 1. Metallic jar 2. The blade attached to a plastic part 3. Some screws to hold the blade assembly 4. ABS frame at the bottom that holds together the jar and the blade assembly 5. The lid Now imagine this simple product that you would often use in some kind of food preparation is made up of chemicals that are known to cause cancer and reproductive harm. I feel guilty I have been using this product to make food for my family including my kid and baby. I have been avoiding Black & Decker solely because it has BPA and these KitchenAid jars are no exception. I would have appreciated had the company actually came out clean and advised customers if it's just the lower frame that contains BPA. Rather they slapped a warning label dolely for regulatory reasons while not acting in the best interest of consumers.
