If you are using hard heavy fabric like heavy weight denim, a size 16 or 18 needle should be strong enough, but you will still, for SAFETY, need to stitch slowly over thick seam junctions, like the crotch of a pair of heavy jeans. If you are using a domestic sewing machine, then you need to consider that the machine itself may not be strong enough for the fabric you are using, and that by using heavy fabrics, and treating it like a factory machine, you may have knocked out the Timing of your machine, which will cause the needle to do down, hit the hook underneath and yes, bend or break your needles. Or you may have a bent needle bar, which will cause the same problems. Therefore you should take it somewhere to be checked over, along with any bent needles and the items you are trying to sew, for the mechanic to see. You might even have the same problem with an industrial machine, which of course will be more expensive to put right. I would advise that before you go buying further packs of maybe stronger needles, that you have a word with a good sewing machine mechanic, and discuss your problems in detail. He will need to see your bent needles and some of the items you are sewing. That will give him some idea of what the problem might be, before he looks at your machine. Hopefully you regularly clean and oil your machine with the correct oils etc, but even so, your mechanic will be able to help you with that sort of thing, and service your machine too. The advice I have given you here is from my own experience with both domestic, factory and ex-factory machines like my own - I am a very experienced sewing machinist of many years. The last thing you want to do is keep bending or breaking needles, so for your own safety, please get your machine checked by a qualified "City and Guilds" or higher, Certificated Sewing Machine Mechanic. Listen carefully to his advice and act on it. Once you have done that, then I wish you many hours of happy and safe sewing.

I WOULDN'T BUY ANY OTHER MAKE OF NEEDLES FOR A FACTORY MACHINE

These are really great needles. They're very strong and the point holds it's sharpness for a long time, keeping the stitches neat and tidy. I have an ex-Factory machine, and Schmetz needles really are the very best needles to use in these machines - I wouldn't buy any other brand for my machines. The quality of these needles shines out way above and beyond anything else. And there speaks the voice of many years of experience.
