Petmate Walkabout Retractable Dog Leash Cord for Dogs up to 44 Pounds, 16 Feet, Medium, Black

Because of negative reviews, I bought a used one in the smaller size for a significantly reduced price. It came in great condition, and I like it. I have a 13 pound miniature pinscher mix who is all muscle and crazy - the leash is strong enough to stand up to his constant tugging and pulling. I love the trigger lock - so much easier than the thumb lock on other leashes. Addressing a couple of the negative reviews: The retraction is not as strong as other leashes, but it's not too bad. I can see where there are complaints about the size of the handle. It is not made for people with large, wide hands. It works fine for me - I wear women's gloves in large if that gives you any indication of the size of the handle.

I like the Petmate Walkabout button system, better than the other system I've tried. Dog is normally free to pull out more leash. Pull trigger to halt that. Pull trigger and press Lock button, release trigger & rest your fingers, to use a fixed-length leash. My dog can quickly feel whether the leash is free or not, which has been a good relationship.

One of the few with the break in the handle some work in reverse and have play out release break default design. Solid design and construction the wind back could be a bit stronger faster but has not failed to recoil once line is free of all tension. My dog behaves and walks with me so I run the line free (default setting) but see a squirrel and I've got the break on with a squeeze and it holds. If your dog challenges the lead then your can run the thumb switch locking out the line. Release of lock is quick and easy. Line feel strong enough for my large dog knowing there is about a foot or two of play when locked as line tightens up inside. Here again a larger coil/spring pulley may be an improvement inside.

Pro: This product has managed to last at least 6 months even with my dog tugging on it.Con: This product does not retract fully and tends to get stuck between the lock function and release.I purchased this product because I had a Walkabout for years until my dog chewed it up. What I did not realize is that there are several manufacturers that make the Walkabout and Petmate is NOT one that I would recommend. It was not worth it to me to purchase this product. I've since returned to using the chewed up Walkabout sold/produced by Aspen Pet.

I really love these retractable leash. I thought I lost my old one. And I couldn't find it at the store where I bought it. So I look it up here on Amazon.It's the best I have use for my dog. The stop trigger on the inside makes all the difference of the world.The only bad thing it's that I bought the wrong size for mistake. And I notice when I rip it form it's case. So I can't return it.

I bought this because I wanted a longer leash for our 60 lb lab-terrier mix and had a poor experience with the similar Flexi's sold locally. Turns out the problem is that the dog chewed on the fabric a few inches up from his collar - for about 10 seconds (if that). That was enough to cause both the Flexi and this brand to fray and break as soon as any tension was placed on it (we didn't get out the front door with this one; at least the Flexi lasted a bit longer). Would think this isn't unusual behavior for a dog, and that the manufacturer would strengthen the first foot or so closest to the dog to prevent this. In any event, have gone back to a shorter heavy rope leash since these won't work for my dog.

I’ve purchased a Walkabout by Petmate leash before (for medium sized dogs) and absolutely LOVE it so when I saw this one (for large sized dogs) I was excited to purchase it so I could have two of them. Unfortunately, I’ve only had this leash for a little over two weeks and it’s completely stuck. The retractable leash has somehow gotten tangled on the inside and I can’t pull it out to untangle it. Very disappointed with this purchase.

The product works fine for a little while. This is our 2nd one, and the first one started failing and the cord wouldn't wind back up normally--you had to feet it back in. The 2nd newer one actually completely broke while walking the dogs, and I lost control of the ability to hold onto one of the pups. The cord was freely pulling and would not stop. Thankfully there were no cars nearby, or I would not have been able to secure then. I had to manually grab the cord. My dogs are 8 pound Chihuahua's--so we aren't talking about a ton of pulling power. How a company can put out such trash is beyond me. I had other brands that would last years with no trouble. I don't throw it around, drop it or anything...it literally just failed on it's own. Don't waste your money. Until they can remedy the problem or make it right...will not buy again.
