The perfect book for children with Selective Mutism
The perfect book for children with Selective Mutism, they can easily see themselves in this book. It gives them understanding that there are other kids out there just like them and it doesn't mean that they have to stay silent forever. If is also an excellent book for their child classmates, so they can better understand why they friend doesn't like to talk. My daughter is 3.5 and she absolutely loves Maya. She is about to get transitioned the an older group at school and we gave this book to the older group teacher, so she can prepare her kids for the new classmate. Highly recommended! Our doctor also recommended the "The Very Quiet Cricket", but as for me I would not recommend it. It is a boring book, which has a lot of repetition and it is not clear to the child that the rubbing wing and not making a noise is the same thing as them not talking. If you don't explain it to the child, they may not get it.

Great book for SM kid to identify with.
Stumbled upon this book when I was looking for books about "shy" kids. Read the Kindle version to my 4 year old. "Mama, she's just like me!" I got to the back cover and found that it was about Selective Mutism. Started researching and we had an answer! She had just started seeing a counselor and she agreed that this is what it was and now we could start off on the right path to help her.I also purchased the paperback version and when she got it, she said she was going to bring it with her to all the places she is shy. She loves when I read it to other people--she seems more at ease when others understand about Selective Mutism.

Recommended for female children
I recommend reading the book to the same sex child. I read great reviews, but my child is male and did not relate to Maya at all. Another related book, Leo on his words disappearing seems to be from a kindergartener setting but my just turned 4 year old boy loved it and related to him more. This book also is more directed towards a late 2, early 3 year old female child as I found it to be in very simple terms.

Great book for Kids with SM
My son is 4 and doesn’t talk in school. At first he didn’t cared about the book because Maya is a girl but he quickly learned that she is like him and wanted to hear it again and again. I hope this book will give him hope and courage to try to speak.

This really helped my daughter!
I ordered this book (last year) because my daughter was not speaking in pre-K. This book helped her a lot. She liked seeing that Maya was not made to speak, and she eventually did it on her own. Also, the illustrations just happened to be close to her reality - her teacher had long, red hair; her dad has darker skin than I (mom) do; and some of Maya's friends looked like her classmates. So those were unexpected coincidences!

Great book
It’s simple, easy to read and understand for a 2 year old. It has helped her understand it’s ok to talk in school.

Amazing resource
Our kiddo talks alllll the time at home, but never talked at preschool. This book quickly became a favorite - she even asked to bring it to school for circle time (and it's given her the courage/confidence to find her voice - she just started talking to her teachers!). Highly, highly recommend.

Cute
A cute book teaching kids about others. It reminds them that it’s their voice and they can use it. Helpful to understand other kids with selective mutism. I buy books like this to teach my kids about differ issues

An excellant story for kids about SM
My 4 year old is dealing with SM and it was like this book was about her. She likes having this book read to her all the time because she said it is just like her. It gives a great explanation of how a child deals with SM. I brought it in to the teacher to read to the class and it had a great response. I would highly recommend this book for children.

Beautiful book! Very helpful for shy child
Great story and great way to encourage speaking in the school environment. We received our copy earlier this week, and by the end of it, our daughter has started to ask other children to play and even shared a few words in front of the whole class. Thank you to this author!

Great book
This book is perfect for younger children 3 to 6 year. Other selective mutism book can be to long and overly complicated.
