Moominpappa's Memoirs (Moomins, 3)

Moominpappa very self aware. His history is heavily squeezed through his viewpoint of life. But the author has put herself into a other skin to write this. You believe that Moominpappa is writing the book.

At this point i’d be surprised if a Tove book wasn’t magical.Another excellent and happy read, an adventure with many of the characters’ parents.All these books are highly recommended.

If you grew up with the Moomintrolls just as I did, you'll probably be just as happy as I was to know that the books are not only available but still in print and you can order brand new unblemished copies. If you didn't grow up with the Moomintroll books, it's never too late to learn to love them or teach the kids in your life to do so. To the uninitiated, it's hard to explain what makes the Moomintrolls so great. Sometimes there are great adventures in their tales but often they are distinguished from other so-called children's literature by the quiet, philosophical bent of much of the text. Either way they're gems not to be missed. (NOTE: when I say "so-called children's literature" it's not because I disdain children's literature but rather that I disdain the idea that it's just for children. A Wrinkle in Time, the Moomintroll books, The Phantom Tollbooth, these are great books and they remain worth reading at any age.)

I love the whole series of Moomin books, but I actually find Moominpapa one of the less interesting characters, so this is probably my least favorite of the series. But that doesn't make it bad... just not as great as the others.

all her books are wonderful and insightful- I just love them all-I enjoy reading them myself the grandchildren want something more exciting to be read to them- so that's ok- I have them for my own enjoyment! My sons loved them when I read these to them whe they were 7 and 10. Get the whole set if you enjoy one of them- you will not be disappointed!

Just a wonderful series. My daughter and I are working our way through the whole collection. I think I'll be even more sorry than my daughter when we're finished.

One of the best out of the Moomin series. It has a refreshing and original outlook that doesn't need to be tied to the other books.Definitely recommend Moominpappa's Memoirs.

This is very similar to "The Exploits of Moominpappa" (ISBN 0140303235). Both "The Exploits of Moominpappa" and "Moominpappa's Memoirs" are translated by Thomas Warburton, but from slightly different manuscripts.It is as if Tove Jansson altered the book slightly for a reprint. Though each passage is very similar, with most sentences being identical, sometimes there are additions or subtractions. So it is not just a different translation: the original Swedish manuscript was changed.Some people seem to prefer "The Exploits of Moominpappa" over "Moominpappa's Memoirs". "Moominpappa's Memoirs" was actually published in Swedish in 1968, long after "The Exploits of Moominpappa" (1952), so it seems that "Moominpappa's Memoirs" was the final version by Tove Jansson.I say, buy them both. "Moominpappa's Memoirs" has a very short "Prologue" which "The Exploits of Moominpappa" (ISBN 0140303235) does not have.But "The Exploits of Moominpappa" (ISBN 0140303235) has a "Gallery" at the end with a sentence about each character, with an illustration each.For these very small differences, and the differences between the whole books, complete your collection and see for yourself. Since both books are quite cheap and quite short, I feel I might as well.
