CliffsNotes on Shakespeare's Othello (Cliffsnotes Literature Guides) (CliffsNotes on Literature) 7th Edition

While it should never take the place of reading the original, Cliffs Notes can play a HUGE role in assisting students in accessing texts that may seem "impossible" as well as encourage deeper thinking and engagement. In this case, it had been several years since reading the text, and had a week before I was supposed to attend the play. Rather than "coming in cold," wanted to have an idea of what to expect, as well as some thoughts as to what look more closely at during the performance. Was an excellent partner to the play.

I used this to help me with an assignment for British Literature. I got a good grade with the help of this book.

Such a great help to understanding a dark and dramatic tragedy. The summaries and character lists to help keep everything straight. Great help in writing those pesky English papers.

My daughter loves to read but often reads so much she gets details confused... these study guides help immensely to slow her down and increase comprehension.

Just what I needed

Did the job - got my daughter through her English course :)

I have used Cliffs notes in the past (paper copies) and found them useful. This one contained spelling mistakes which does not inspire confidence in a literary review. There is also an error in the commentary on the play.

If you are looking for helpful, insightful and easy to follow cliff notes on any great literary work, look no further than 'CliffsNotes'. They provide the background to the author and to the play. They explain the themes and the characters extremely well, so well in fact that you may feel that you don't need to read the actual play!

Das Original wird hier sehr transparent aufgeschlüsselt und zusammengefasst. Summary und Commentary auf wenigen "knackigen" Zeilen transportieren Shakespeare's oftmals schwierige Sprache in gängige (englische) "Übersetzung". Besser geht's nicht! Für Klausuren, oder um dem Werk näher zu kommen, äußerst hilfreich.

I used these notes for my Higher English studies when we were using 'Othello' as one of our pieces. The notes were very good at helping to see the play from a different light and highlight techniques relevent to writing an essay. Very good for studets studying this piece.

After skimming a few pages and reading the book's comments on certain key points, I have come to the conclusion that this book only scratches on the surface. It is very neatly summarized and offers novices a good idea about how to think about the play. However, I would not recommend this work for university purposes. In some crucial points, like the unities and the structure of the play, it is highly inaccurate and rather short, leaving out important facts. It fulfils its job on a high-school level, but does not qualify for a useful source in any acadamic context.
