The first half (135 pgs.) is dedicated to the ecology and biology of North American Woodpeckers and is a very, very fine presentation. The second half is devoted to species profiles of the 28 woodpecker species found in North America.The species accounts are excellently written and provide a wealth of useful and interesting information. Lastly, the many photographs are positively great, making this book nearly as much a work of Art as a splendid source of valuable information. A major High-5 to author Backhouse !

This book is filled with large, beautiful photos of woodpeckers as well as well-written, informative text.Chapters include: What is a Woodpecker?, Anatomy, Communication, Nesting, Reproduction and Mortality, Feeding Habits, Woodpeckers and Humans, and Species Profiles. But the photographs make this book special. They are amazing.

This book is fantastic! Colorful images filled with extensive information about all woodpeckers of north america. I have learned an immense amount regarding woodpeckers which will help with my photography. This book is a must have!!!

This is the best book on woodpeckers with lots of pictures and beautiful to leave on a coffee table with a window looking outside for woodpeckers. I strongly recommend this book for bird lovers
