This is the bible of wooden boat repair with information gathered from over 50 years of experience repairing, building, surveying and loving wooden boats. Captain Taube provides detail that can not be found in any other manual with illustrations he drew to make repairing an easier process. A vital purchase to do things right.

This book is an excellent read for anyone, not just for boat builders. The author knows far more than boat repairs. By the end of reading this book, you will know all there is to know about wooden boats as well as how to repair and maintain your soul. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I'm a bit reluctant to read how-to books because the language is often confusing and assumes knowledge that may not be part of the reader's experience. For instance, if one is a cook, one knows how much "a pinch" of salt is. But for a non-cook, "a pinch" doesn't define the amount satisfactorily. Happily, "The Art of Wooden Boat Repair" is different from many how-to books. It is clearly laid-out, and starts with the basics and builds to the more complex. More important, it is germane to all craftsmen: how to not only get the job done, but how and WHY it should be done well. I've sailed on many wooden boats, and have had the unfortunate experience of wishing I were more adept at repairs. Captain Taube's book gives me confidence that I actually could apply some of the techniques he so thoroughly explains. It's a must-have for the sailor in your family, but the principles apply to anyone wishing to complete a task or reach and goal and feel good about doing it right. I can highly recommend this book and hope it's a great success for the writer.

I am not a shipwright nor do I even own a wooden boat, but I do love carpentry and am especially intrigued by how difficult construction problems with wood are solved. I picked up The Art of Wooden Boat Repair on a whim but then found myself entranced by the stories and home-spun advice on moulding a flat two dimensional piece of lumber into a form bent in all dimensions to exact curved specifications. There were tricks that the author used that would be helpful for land-lovers like myself for more mundane problems. The writing is relaxed and easy to understand. The illustrations are done by the author and truly complement the text. The book also captures that sense of romanticism that must have pervaded the world of wooden ships many years ago. Taube is helping to keep alive what must have been a fine and noble tradition that allowed men to go down to the sea in ships. Ahoy!

It only rehashed stuff that everyone who has done any boatwork knows already. Some of it is factually incorrect such as his method of establishing the shape of a new plank for example, and his advice to treat planks with corn oil and beeswax does not sound like good advice at all better to paint all round with red lead paint. I did not think it was worth the paper it was written on.

choose this rating because the man obviously knows his trade.I recommend this book to anyone who owns and repairs a wooden boat.

Good book but could have covered more , especially cabin area's and potential leaks and defects.

Even if you are not intending to renovate a wooden boat this book is a really interesting and informative read. It is full of useful tips and techniques all of which are clearly explained. I read it from cover to cover and enjoyed the author's obvious love of anything wooden
