This book is the exact same as the paperback version.
This book is basically the same Small Size and version (black and white occassional pictures) as the paperback version. It is hard cover with a color cover. Not a hardcover picture book and not colorized art.

All aboard the Oshun Oxtra!
Exploits of Moominpappa aka Moominpappa's Memoirs is definitely one of the "must reads" in Tove Jasson's ouvre, in which Moominpappa recounts the adventures of his youth. I'd describe the writing and illustrations as "baroque sepia-toned whimsy" which includes characters like Edward the Booble and items like meerschaum trams. A book one can read and re-read without ever getting tired of the pictures or storyline.

I would definitely recommend to start reading from the second book
This the first book about the Moomins. All the characters are kind of underdeveloped and the plot is weird. So different from the rest of the series! I would definitely recommend to start reading from the second book: Comet in Moominland (Originally: Kometjakten/Kometen kommer) – 1946.

Because even Daddy was young once...
The patriarch of the Moomin family tells the story of his misspent youth to his children. (A Moomin is a sort of troll whose ancestors lived in or behind old-fashioned stoves--the best way to know what they are is to collect every book in this wonderful series and study the illustrations.)This is a wonderful book to read aloud, chapter by chapter, to the whole family. Parents and older children can enjoy a sly wink together while the younger ones can just enjoy the story. Many surprising twists enliven the plot which begins with Moominpapa as a child in a stern orphanage. He escapes and soon finds true friendship with the laconic Hodgkins, the rebellious Joxer and the confused Muddler. They set to sea in the wonderful boat/submarine that Hodgkins has made, evade a monster, pick up a stowaway and ride out a storm. They encounter a king and a ghost. They undertake an undersea voyage. Periodically, Moominpapa is overcome by emotion as he tells his story. Both the story which he tells so seriously and his breaks are funny. The moral of the story is that Daddy was young once, but he's young no longer. Read it to your kids using funny voices for the different characters, then savor it yourself after they have gone to bed.

Superb
Tell me this lovely children's novel isn't out of print! If so, you must seek it out at your public library. All of Jansson's "Moomin" books are wonderful, and this one is too. Moominpappa, a round little pudgy creature, writes down the memoirs of his youth - how he was born under a lucky star, how he escaped from an orphanage, and how he met his friends and fellow oddball creatures: Hodgkins, a practical, mechanical genius; the Muddler, a worried collector of bric-a-brac; the Joxter, a lazy fellow with a no-nonsense philosophy; the Mymble's daughter, a mischievous but merry girl; and Edward the Booble, a giant something-or-other who keeps popping up when least expected. The cast of curious characters goes on in this delightful tale of a fantastic world that is also gentle and funny in a very offbeat way. Moominpappa's meandering adventures are interrupted now and again as we cut back to the present time, where the next generation listen with rapt attention to the heroic tale of its author. Sweet, subtle fun for kids around grade 4.

Not as magical as other Moomin books!
I'm 41 and long have I loved the Moomins and are perhaps my favourite of all children's stories.Tove Jansson created lovable and quirky characters, characters that you instantly feel reflect your own personality, with a simple message that a simple way of life and a life of acceptance is best, set in a beautiful land where nature is also a leading character. Here is the fourth in the series, The Exploits of Moominpappa, in other words Moominpappa's memoirs that he is seen writing during the previous two books. It takes him from being brought up in an orphanage and his escape, to his adventures with his first friends Hodgkins, the Joxter and the Muddler to finally how he met Moominmamma. Running alongside are interludes where Moominpappa is reading these memoirs to his son Moomintroll, Sniff and Snufkin who discover that the Muddler and the Joxter in fact are their fathers.Unfortunately the story is not as magical as the previous two, which may have something to do with the fact that Moominpappa is rather lacking in humility, in my opinion. It is very enjoyable nonetheless and part of a life-affirming series.

Endlessly exciting exploits!
I have read and reread this marvellous book many many times over the years since it first introduced me to the Moomin family and friends. Each time I still feel the tingle of magic and melancholy which makes Tove Jansson's work so precious. I cannot possibly recommend all her books enough but this one holds a special place in my heart.

Beautiful but damaged
Stunning book with beautiful illustrations. However my copy arrived with all the corners bashed in so it was a disappointing thing to give as a gift.Lovely book well worth the cost, just needs better packaging.

Misadvertised book cover.
Bought this book as part of a larger Tove Jansson collection, thinking it will come in the size and shape of the book in the picture. The book I received was a bit smaller and with a different cover. Either way the cover illustrations are very nice but I wish it was advertised for what it is, in case other people like me are wanting a complete collection of Tove's books. Happened for 2 more of the second-hand books I bought.

A rich, sweet story
Jansson takes on the voice of one of her beloved characters to write this book, and it is seamless. I could feel that Moominpappa, and not Tove Jansson, has written this book. It is a delightful read and an interesting backstory to anyone that likes the Moomins series. I enjoyed it immensely, and highly recommend it.
